long, wierd hours for great pay??? yup i did it, and loved every minute of it

first off...get a CDL A ( needed to lawfully operate a class 8 tow truck)
    then get certified

i recommend wreckmaster 2/3 & 4/5 set of certs to start...later you can go up to level 8/9 ( air bag recovery and large items such as planes)

then apply at a local shop that has the trucks...they will show you what you didnt learn in class's, put you on the scheduale and rotate ya in

fyi...watch your safety chains and the front end of motorhomes....fiberglass breaks rather easily...lol

    "see ya in the ditch"

and for those of you who dont know...i am wreckmaster certified level 4/5, and i even still have my wrenching certs

There are stand alone companies that just do heavy hauling. Years ago my Brother -in-law worked for Continental Towing out of Los Angeles CA and all they did was tow the heavy stuff. It's a great job and yes most of your off time will be at home but sometimes they go long.

I rode with him one time and this company had a reputation that they could do anything they liked and would never get pulled over. I had my doubts until we came to a red light and a CHP was sitting right across from us and we blew right threw the red light. The CHP waved as we went by.

You've got you're military experience and you should use it. But be sure to document what kind of equipment you're running now. Take some pictures to show your civilian employer. I say this because I too was in the service (Navy Seabee's) and alot of employers will not consider military experience. I had to show that my time was OTR and hauling heavy equipment. I had other experience as well but it help when I showed that I was out on the road for months at a time driving civilian trucks.
