There is a probably another site that serves as a forum for the tow truck / recovery industry. Each state typically will also have a Towing Association so you may want to google: Illinois Tow Truck Association or something to that effect as I recall you were asking about Illinois the other day.

From my own business perspective: It would be very hard to be an O/O with a large wrecker or rotator in a large metropolitan area like Chicago. The barriers to entry are going to be high even if you have the cash to support the operation. Each large city has a pretty established "Old guard" of towing companies which typically tend to get the calls from various trucking companies, insurance companies and the municipal calls - even if you make it onto the municipal call sheet you would have an uphill battle as many police officers will just call the "old guard" in. In addition you would need a terminal or yard where you could bring recovered vehicles and salvage cargo back to which in any major city is going to be a high lease expense. There is a TV show called "Wrecked" that follows around one of Chicago's largest towing outfits - O'hare Towing and Recovery - Perhaps you could look it up.

If you want my opinion I would probably get to the city you are going to live in and survey the tow truck / recovery market and the operators involved in that market and how big there operations are. Potentially work for one of them for a lil' while to get a really good idea of what it is like. If you are in a Metro area I would strongly advise against just purchasing a truck, getting insurance on said truck, and rolling the dice. If your in a medium or smaller market you may have a small bit easier of a time of making it work however it is still an uphill battle. A

Are there any questions you have in particular?

    UK-Chris Thanks this.

    Many thanks.
I'll try and find the show and the association.I have avoided the association route as I'm not sure how much support I'd get from local business owners.
Turkeys voting for thanksgiving springs to mind.
