Both, came from the office (lower estimate) and my mentor's boss, an o/o with trucks leased to Swift.

I just passed my second road test yesterday and now on the waiting list for my own truck..yay! I volunteered for extra backing school just for the experience, I go tomorrow # 6am... can't hurt, I guess..

Downshifting sucks. Grinded quite a few gears today. I'm going to blame it on the truck having 1,266,000 miles. I was pulling a 45' trailer so at least that part was easy. If you was at the Flying J in SC off of 77,exit 73, I may have woken you up with the grinding. Can someone give me a few tips? If you're driving 55 in a 10spd, then you are coming up on a stop way ahead, how do you handle it? Do you let it bog down while braking then try to pick a gear? Do you brake, then pick a gear, then brake, then pick a gear, etc.? I already found out that you don't knock it in neutral and free wheel :biggrin_25510:. I'm losing my confidence fast.

You seem to have skipped the part where you rev up the RPM's 400 or so.

Downshifting is simple once you get the hang of it.

Take it out of tenth, then lightly push it up into 9th. Don't worry about the clutch. Lightly push it towards 9th gear, don't try to jam it in, just a little bit of pressure, not enough where they grind. As you are doing this, step on the accelerator to bring the RPM's up. When the RPM's come up, it will fall right into gear.

Your mechanic and your wallet will thank you for double-clutching, but the choice remains yours... plenty o' truckers do either and some both.

We are required to double-clutch. My upshifting is fine, its just hard to match the revs on the way down. My instructor says double-clutch and 400 revs, but he floats it in with about 200 it seems without using the clutch. I guess " do as I say, not as I do". I did ok today but I was downshifting a gear at a time while braking in between. I was wondering if most of you guys use that method or slow way down then skip 2 or 3 gears as you go. On the upside, I'm nailing that 90 degree back now. Got to practice it for a few hours straight the other day. A Werner recruiter and a TMC recruiter came by the other day. The Werner guy came across like a salesmen. I didn't like him at all. The TMC guy was straight up I think. U.S. Express isn't coming because they are not hiring in this area now. Guess its getting pretty tight out there. We ran into a former student at the truck stop. He has been working for Mcelroy for two years. He had all positive things to say but said he had only 1200 miles this week. Worst week in two years he said. Got home every weekend though.

Yeah school is really strict on it, but when you get out there things will be different. We weren't allowed to skip gears or start out in anything but 1. Instructor who was also their mechanic kept yelling "If the manufacturer wanted you to start out in 2nd, it'd be called 1st!"

Skipping gears on the way down just increases the amount you have to rev... 400 for EACH gear you're taking on the way down.

It seems confusing how they do it because by the time the instructor has to kick in and do it for you, your ground speed has reduced so much that you no longer need the 400. That's why it seems like he slips it in without revving.

Bottom line, the RPM's have to be at whatever THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN for that next gear for the speed you are travelling.

When upshifting and you are going a certain speed at 1700 rpms, that means that the truck would be at 1300 if you were in the next higher gear at that moment. When you shift up, it automatically lays down to the 1300. But when you downshift, you have to get the RPM's to match the next lower gear manually, so this is why you have to rev. In a regular car, you can downshift into gear no matter what, and the engine will just rev up by itself. These trucks just won't let you put it in there unless it's already right.

    Trucking?
That downshifting has me laughing sooo hard....lol
Try this 1. let off the accelerator 2. clutch and easily set the stick infront of 9th 3. give light fuel as you feel the slot open (you should be very slightly easing the stick in the gear) You'll feel a catch and (((( BOOM )))) There you go.
I try to go through days without a single catch......haven't done it yet.

Thanks for the shifting tips. I have gotten better I guess. I never miss an upshift and as long as I downshift one gear at a time I do alright. I clipped a stop sign with my fender mirror today on this ridiculous left turn on a skinny two lane road. Thats a first:biggrin_25510:. I have to do three hours of night driving tomorrow in that ragged out million mile peterbilt. Should be interesting. Few more recruiters stopped by today as well, Roehl and Mcelroy. I'm still impressed with Mcelroy but I know the mileage won't be there to start or maybe ever. I put Roehl in the Werner category because it seemed like the same sales pitch. Everyone else in my class has been blinded by TMC's chrome. Thats all they talk about, how nice the trucks look. I told them its a double-edged sword because when they put a scratch on that truck its going to be their ###. Oh well, what do I know.
