So I just got my CDL and applied, among others, to XPO Logistics. I didn't realize they had both an LTL and Truckload division, so thinking I was applying to LTL, I inadvertently applied to truckload. Got a call from recruiter today. I told her that wasn't what I was meaning to apply for but to tell me about the position anyways. She said trainees start at $0.50/mile with a guaranteed minimum $1,250/week plus $5k sign on bonus and tuition reimbursement. 100% no touch dry van hauling chemical totes. Out 12-14 days and claimed newer equipment.

I did a search on here and there seems to be a lot of negativity towards XPO's truckload division. Mainly claims of low pay, poor equipment, stole my pension, etc. Are these from disgruntled Conway drivers after merger or is there current legitimacy to their claims? On the surface it seems like a decent gig for a new driver. I like the thought of a guaranteed minimum paycheck, especially as I'm learning the ropes out there. I would prefer to get into their LTL division but imagine this would at least get my foot in the door towards that?

If LTL is what you really want don't mess around with OTR unless you just need a job. OTR experience doesn't count according to the LTL companies I have applied to and been rejected by, XPO being one of them.

If ltl side of xpo is what your ultimate goal is, go straight for it. If you spent a few years in the truckload division and then transferred into the ltl division, you would likely start at the bottom of the list in terms of seniority at your terminal. I don’t think length of service would follow you from one division of the company to another. Verify this with the recruiter before making your decision.

Your length of service (seniority) Is important in terms of bidding on start times and line haul runs and vacation bids.

Yeah I'm definitely going to try to get into LTL still, be it with XPO or another company. I guess I'm looking at this as a good paying backup if I can't get in the LTL door somewhere. The recruiter did at least give me the website for their LTL job postings, and I just filled it out. I think I can make my budget stretch for another 6-8 weeks before I need a paycheck if I keep things conservative, so no hurry to take the first offer, just trying to keep my options open and get as much information as possible.

The question now is will they hire and train you in LTL Surprised they train and pay so well while training. Don’t really know what Training an LTL Driver needs except knowledge of area. I did a lot of LTL never needed training. Now with GPS and a CDL what more do they need for LTL?Its a piece of cake

I was surprised at the pay as well. I want to get into LTL but will definitely keep this in the backburner just in case. Link to job posting below. Recruiter said she only handles truckload division so couldn't speak on anything LTL. I can't imagine LTL training for a new driver being much different than for OTR. I don't like the thought of a random person watching me through a camera, but not sure it would be a deal breaker until I get enough experience to be able to go anywhere.

I like what I'm hearing but will be following this thread. You know the old story..."If it's to good to be true."

I do have a question though, I noticed on the XPO website that they have "No careless, reckless, or following too closely violations within the last 24 months"

Sadly dumb ### me was involved in a motorcycle wreck in stop and go traffic. It was Dec. 2016. Would they hold that against me if I applied, or would they be OK with it since it's about to drop off? Inquiring minds.

Just wait 2 months. That’s one they probably won’t back off of.
