Cummins and Detroit went with EGR in 2003 and DPF/DEF with EGR in 2008.
CAT was in a transitional period in 2003-04 and went with ACERT technology in 2005. In 2008 they also went with DPF/DEF with ACERT.
CAT never had EGR and IMO the ACERT is less problematic.bayoustate Thanks this. -
Small correction..... DPF and DEF are two different emission standards. DEF (also known s SCR) came into the picture for the 2008 model year. DEF didn't come until a few years later....2011 I think but don't quote me. So, if I am correct, it would go like this:
ECM's: 1995-1999 (yes computer's are an emissions tool)
EGR: mid 2003
CAT Bridge engines: 2003-2004
CAT Accert: 2005
DPF: 2008
DEF: 2011Last edited: Aug 25, 2016

Detroit Diesel came out with DDEC circa 1986, and others had gone electronic before 95.
There's also the 1994 emissions, the point when manufacturers began using the diesel oxidation catalyst.bayoustate Thanks this. -
Mmmm.....DDEC.... forgot about that. there was also those peak engines in Pete's.... not to sure about any of that either. Still quite sure you could get mechanical Cummins in 94. And mechanical Cats in 98?
What is a diesel oxidation catalyst and who used that? Don't think I have anything like that on my 95 and 99 Cummins.bayoustate Thanks this. -
DOC was a very coarse filter... now, it's typically a part of the DPF inlet. I believe Cummins began using them at least on light and medium duty applications in 94, though I gotta do a bit of digging to be entirely certain of the year.

EPA04 - EGR
EPA07 - DPF
EPA10 - DEF
GHG14 and GHG17 are just continuations of EPA10 with higher necessary NOX reduction.
This is when the stuff was mandated, as mentioned different companies tried different things before this.rank and bayoustate Thank this. -
Cat intake act valves are same thing as egr. .cat didn't want to be part of known egr because Detroit and cummins had been for years and had so many issues. So yes real world car motors have egr system. That's why if you tear one down that has had bad iav you will find Sut in intake fresh air systems. Also the motor that destroyed cay motors in the USA.
rank and bayoustate Thank this. -
A lot of people don't realize that DPF was mandated in 2007, not 2008. It goes by engine year, not truck year. Most 2007 trucks had 2006 EGR only engines in them (hence the term "pre emissions 2007").rank and bayoustate Thank this.

I wouldn't even know where to look for that on my '99 M11. With well over a million on the clock, I imagine it needs to be replaced. I can't believe it hasn't caused a problem.
