No mention has been made about engines being most efficient when running at their sweet spot . A properly geared tractor will be more efficient at 70 m.p.h than one improperly spec'ed running at 60 m.p.h.
Our newer trucks were spec'ed to mostly run at 70 m.p.h. . A few of us run Canada and are governed at 65 m.p.h. . My truck is at 1425 r.p.m. 's running at 65 . The sweet spot is 1400 - 1500 r.p.m.'s .
When my truck was in the shop I had a truck we had bought from corporate when they sold all their trucks . It was running 1600 r.p.m. at 65 . Run too slow and you may be below the sweet spot .

None of ours are geared to run fast. They're geared to pull heavy loads at an economical speed in the high 50's... at the sweet spot.

    60MPH Thanks this.

Thanks, Rusty, for a complete answer. Glad that works for you and your FM. I won't be seeing any extra stop or layover pay from mine by speeding to the receiver. He's way more concerned with his fleets' fuel numbers. That's fine with me as I'm comfortable running the speeds I do and banking the fuel bonus. I'm rarely up against my 70 anyhow, which is a bit perplexing at times.

If there is no advantage to running faster why did ATA petition NHTSA to mandate speed limiters in 2006 ?
The petition never had a chance . NHTSA knew ATA was well aware all past studies on speed limiters concluded forcing trucks to drive slower than other traffic increased the risk of accident .
The reason is simple . Slower trucks result in more interactions (passing and braking ) which have the potential for accidents .
A study that was not yet complete when Ontario passed the Speed Limiter law concluded once highways reached 75% capacity speed limiters had a negative effect on safety .
Prime , TMC , et al are saving pennies at the expense of safety .

When you are the one paying the Insurance bill and have records that show accidents are down, you just keep them down. Been there done that.
