Well CondoCruiser, there is no one fund that is appropriate for everyone.
It depends on your personal, financial situation; your goals; your tolerance for dramatic changes in daily values (both up and down).
But if I were starting out building an investment portfolio, I would pick an index fund.
It would give you great diversification - spread your bets among 100s of companies,
and it would be cheap - annual fees and commissions would be low.
I'd probably start with either a fund that trades on the NYSE called a Spider (ticker: SPY) that tracks the S&P 500, or a Vanguard S&P 500 fund.
