I read an article on the Internet today about an o/o who said his operating cost per mile was $1.03. How can this be? Assuming that the truck and trailer are paid for he's still spending .55 per mile on a realllllly good day in fuel. Probably closer to .70 per mile. This leaves about .30 for permits insurance and yeah you know everything else. Is he not paying himself? Who can afford to run at $1.03 per mile!!??
Your operating cost per mile?

He said that's what it cost per mile to operate the truck that's not what He is getting per mile ... He is mostly like making closer to $2 a mile... so in fact his profit would be about .97 per mile ..

my cost per mile is .83-.85 Cpm. My truck payment, maint, ins, etc etc is .40 cpm fuel is running between .40-.45. I run slow though 58-60 you would be amazed how much money you can save

My cost runs $1.16/mi if I drive 80,000 miles a year

I think my cost is about a nickle a mile more than I get paid. I figure if I can turn one more load a week I can make money though.

$XXX.XX per day and $X.XX per mile.

13000/week fixed operating cost is .21cpm I don't figure fuel in there as its variable. My operating cost is typically somewhere between 1.01-1.21/mile all depending on fuel. It changes every week with the cost of fuel. I prefer to calculate my operating cost by the week as opposed to by the year/month because its more accurate IMO. But that's me and that's how I figure my costs. You may operate at 1.03 this week but that can change next week with the cost of fuel. Which is why I prefer to figure my costs weekly and update them weekly. There's a science to it lots of number crunching and spread sheets.

What pays better.......
$1250 for a load that goes 500 miles or $2300 for 1230 miles?
Because to say that you rate is "$x.xx per mile" IMO is wrong. You have fixed monthly expenses and variable mileage expenses. If you understood that, you'd have seen what I was getting.Attached Files:
