It is not how many miles you run it is about how much those miles pay. Lots of people seem to forget that. I met a guy in the neighbor town and he showed me his numbers for 2011. He drove 56,000mls and made $180,000 with his 91 Pete and two different trailers he owns.
Your operating cost per mile?

Eh that's true...I know the last $500 day I had lost my ### though. It was actually SUPPOSED to be a $500 day turned into about a $-450 day got stuck and the load didn't cover the tow bill. However we have had $500 days where we have taken home money not much as you said but still profit. Working on averages is good. I prefer to go week to week but a balance of the 2 is probably the best. I know where you are coming from but there are times when averaging at the end of the week can screw you. Been there though I made more than I did at the end of the week and threw my load book out the window I was so livid.rollin coal and fuzzeymateo Thank this.

80K miles in a year dispatching yourself, trying to get top dollar rates amongst competition who constantly lowers the bar, is hard work. I turned 76K last year. I'm on pace to maybe turn about 10K less than that this year, or if things get really busy 4th quarter I could possibly match those miles. Like another poster said it's not the miles you turn, it's what you keep and the rates you earn. I'll take $120K on 50K miles in a year over $225K on 150K miles every single time... Actually I'd never be happy turning 100K+ miles in a year unless it was at $2.30-$2.50 a mile or better. Been there and done it for much less per mile. It's no fun making everyone else money and not having any left over for one's self.Lepton1, vikingswen and areelius Thank this.

I should point out, when I say "important", it was actually hurting some of my decisions on the loads I accepted.379exhd Thanks this.

In fact as of the first of this month 6-1-13 I'm at $3.38/mi all miles. I have only sleep in my truck 22 nights and really enjoying spending time at home. I may only make $150,k this year but it will only cost me $50,000 to do it, yesterday I made $1,115 on 42 miles that's $26/mi that there is what keeps my numbers up!!!!
rollin coal and Container Hauler Thank this. -

i lease my truck from idealease, its full service maintaince and i have peace of and i get a new truck every 4 years, if your goal is to build equity then this option may not be for you, personally i dont care the truck is a tool to make money not a toy. I use Kevin Rutherfords software to keep my books it gives an amzingly accurate look at my operation, i have a degree in finance so i am always looking at ways to maximize my profits, now i am lucky in that i haul loads less than 20000# most of the time in a dry box so my fuel costs are going to be lower than someone hauling oversize, and id drive slow as crap because the loads i haul dont require me to be in a huge hurry, the object is drive smarter not harder, fuel this month averaged me .43 cpm
Twicebit Thanks this. -
Runs me 1.24 per mile.Including payment, insurance, iftas, kyus, mant. and rest of god knows what.

$.43 for fuel....could you break that down a bit more, show how you did that? MPG? Do you get a huge discount? Must run very little deadhead....the lease deal sounds good too, though I'm sure that can't be inexpensive.
