I started with them a couple years ago. ($.25cpm!) I remember I got into a pis*ing contest with the very first customer I showed up to, somewhere in Idaho. Furniture place, go figure.

I thought Roehl was low at .32 cpm... my best friends mom is a trucker and she told me not to accept any less than .40 cpm starting pay but I havent found a company offering that yet to a new driver.actually I think Melton does but im not about that flatbed life...

Old Dominion and Dayton freight are both hiring out of Des Plaines - just another idea. Good Luck!

I'll pay the terminal another visit once I have my cdl in hand, make sure they know im interested and worth the trouble to train . I havent applied at Dayton freight but I'll do it tonight along with YRC. Thanks for the suggestion!

Well if you're right down the street from OD, I've got a good Idea where you're at - i'm here too, dangit.

If they're no luck there is literally a ton of local companies in around, R&M, Geantos, Ceva, Holland, Con-Way, and plenty more I'm missing. If it suits your fancy, there is the big fuel terminal nearby that is always bumpin' but you'll probably need experience before tanking gas around.

Even if you start with a not so top paying LTL for line haul you'll be in the industry and getting one of these top paying companies you will be a shoe in. Even some of the lowest paying LTL's pay more then Otr as a new driver or even experienced. Just get your foot in the door then it's all gravy as long as you keep your record clean.

Is it worth the trip to see if they will take you on as a dock worker to get your foot in the door?. I"m talking about A.B.F., spoke to a guy who was making a delivery, he thought i worked for that company and went to give me the paperwork, i said "no just wanted to ask you a question if you don"t mind", said "sure" i asked if they were hiring, "oh yeah, as a matter of fact they hired 5 A guys in the last week, and they all quit the first day, did"t want to do combo work" my look was worth a thousand words, and i said "what a bunch of prima dona"s", he said "you know what that means?" yes i do, turned out at one point many years ago when they were numbers not letters we worked for the same company, my problem is the dam work history as i was a union carpenter after the teamsters and the constant lay off cycle.

I think you misunderstand, it"s not that i want to work the dock, i want the driver position, but my understanding is and this is coming from a supervisor at a.b.f., is that " Will start you off on the dock to see how your work ethic is and from there we will send you to our school in PA.", meaning foot in the door, as i said in other post i was a teamster, many years ago, and although i put 4 years exp. it counts for nothing now as the whole industry has changed.
