    Set some certain consideration such as if a thread does not have at least 8-10 posts, quotes or replies in it, close them forever.

    I have seen forums that automate the closing of the thread to nothing new posted on it after 3 months dormant. It keeps the thread open for search and then keeps the late poster from activating it with a stupid or irrelevant comment just to add to their post.
