Hello, this is only my second post. I've been driving for a few years now, and I keep getting different answers on logging bobtail miles. Can anyone tell me, do you have to log them? Does the 100 air mile radius rule affect this?

Bobtail miles...if you're working...Line 3
If you're relieved of duty....Line 1 -
Okay,so I need to keep track of bobtail miles so I can use total miles and miles driven boxes correctly.
-
If you log this time on line 1. Then send in your logs, reflecting 275 miles with only 3 hours driving (from line 3). You're going to get hit with a speeding violation from your logging department audits.
I get dinged every time I do this. I just gave up, and started logging it as driving. If I had the hours that is, and I was going home for the weekend. -
You must show all driven miles. If you are off-duty and bobtailing home don't show them on your log however you should be showing them on your trip report as off-duty miles in this manner support the IFTA taxes on all miles driven in any state. Failure to show them as shown here could cause you/your company to be fined big time under the IFTA agreement.

psanderson, I'm glad you are part of this forum.
We can learn a great deal of information from your experience as a DOT official. -

Hey there, PSAnderson! Welcome to the forum!
Man, I wish you'd been around when I was asking stupider questions than I do now.

Now, I make a notation under my recorded miles saying "on duty". Then, I flag my off duty driving and make a note of start/end locations and miles for that trip.
Might be more than I need to show, but I figure that as long as I am legal it keeps my company happy and is one less thing for the DOT to complain about.
