Ratings and Reviews

Former Employee - Apr 22, 2019

Company routes to all 48 states. Hires both company and owner operators. Company pays mileage to owner operators. Miles can easily exceed 3000+ per week. Company only pays toll to/from east coast. IL tolls are never reimbursed. All loads are in company dry van trailers. Home time varies. Can potentially be home (Elgin area) every week, less for drivers taking west coast runs. Many loads are LTL. Sometimes pickups and deliveries are nowhere near driver services like truck stops or rest areas, leaving a driver “stranded” without creature comforts. Dispatcher does not confirm appointment time and delivery addresses. This causes loss of time and income. Dispatcher may not be available or able to answer driver concerns outside business hours. Safety manager is usually quick to respond if needed. ELD that is provided is charged for by the month, however ELD is not supported by the company. Driver must call ELD manufacturer if problems. Fuel cards and fuel discounts are offered. If driver owns a newer truck that can go into CA, driver may be asked to meet another driver with older truck outside of CA, swap loads/trailers and head back into CA to make the delivery. This greatly reduces milage earnings potential for the week. Owner operators make local deliveries on inbound loads. Overall, NFS is an OK company to work for if the owner operator is willing to put up with dispatcher errors and poor scheduling.

Pros

-Pay received weekly and on time. -Fuel cards and fuel discounts. -Mileage can easily exceed 3000 miles per week. -Company tries to get drivers home as requested.

Cons

-Lack of dispatcher follow through. Poor communication by dispatcher. Dispatcher often gives inaccurate addresses/load appointment times. In many cases, dispatcher says appointment is “First Come, First Served”, when there is actually an appointment necessary. Have had situations where truck needed to wait until next day for appointment. -Tolls within IL are not reimbursed. Unless you take a load to/east coast, tolls are not reimbursed.
