If you live in the north east part of the country this company probably will be a good fit for you. They operate only in the eastern states. However the benefits are the worst I’ve seen as a company driver. Meaning their medical or dental providers are not the typical like blue cross blue shield or even United healthcare, it’s a local type provider that when I looked them up at the better business bureau it was not recommended. So I had to purchase my own . This sucks if you’re not former military where you can go to the VA as a alternative. Dispatchers are extremely disrespectful in the sense that they will abuse labor laws to exhaust you or even after you worked 14 days straight 10 hrs a day and ask for a 34 reset they will literally tell you “you have enough hrs to run more” . If you don’t run everyday they will doc your pay by making you sit . Management pretty much thinks all drivers are expendable. I worked here almost a year and into my 2nd week I was ready to leave the company but managed to hold on . I found out they were bought out by Heartland express when I arrived to orientation. Right out of orientation I received a truck that had fumes coming into the cab of the truck , a mat for a mattress , a broken seat and no matter how much I complained about it nothing was done about it. I did not realize how much my health was effected by this until I left .

Pros

Plenty of work if you stay on their wal mart account , pay checks are always on time

Cons

Equipment, management, the worst benefits . Trucking experience doesn’t matter

***MY SMITH TRANSPORT STORY***

I see people ask about them a lot so I figured Id start a thread to track my status with the company. Finished orientation Friday and heading out tomorrow on my first run. Seems like a good company, I was impressed with the orientation. didn't sell me promises of fairys and pixie dust. They laid out the positives and negatives. Anywho not much else to say right now but Ill be updating this post from time to time to update what its like working for them. Be safe out there drivers

Smith Transport sent me an Escrow refund check and im a company driver

I didn't know company drivers had to pay into an escrow account. Some weeks I got a $400 dollar after taxes paycheck and some weeks I got a $700 dollar after taxes paycheck. at Smith Transport , most loads were drop and hook rolls of paper. Rome, Georgia international paper mill with the Georgia Pacific saw mill in the back would have you sweep out your trailer before dropping and hooking.

SMITH TRANSPORT Good or Bad

The company is not bad, miles sometimes you get 2500 nd sometimes you get less average lenght of haul is anywhere between 200 to 800 equipment are well taken care of but they don't give the nice peterbilt with long nose to new hire you gotta be there for 5 years or more, dm are okay but you know people having a bad day sometimes nd you know they will find someone to blame which is gonna be you. it's a good small outfit if you can get your feet in just go for it nd u wont regret it.
