ok. I am new to this site.and already i have a story to share.this happened three weeks back. i am an otr trucker for three years working with a not so big company...
ok coming to the story. my dispatch gave me a load from boston to be delivered in new york.got onto the highway and was doing only 50-55mph..was passed by another driver doing a 65(dont wanna mention his company).i turned my headlights off and on to let him that he has cleared me.so he comes over back to my lane.he even came on the cb and appreciated my courtesy( i was blushing in all angles![]()
). then he was out of my sight (must have increased his speed). but then after five minutes i caught upto him and i check my speed.nope was doing still 55.so i turn on my turn signals and proceed to pass him while suddenly he speed up so i change back to my lane and again he slows down.thinking that he will speed up i did not bother to pass him and as expected he sped up after 30 secs.this continued for ten minutes and then i was stating to get some doubts and then just out of the blue he slams his brakes.me being a cautious driver i leave about four cars length between.(better safe than sorry) so had no problem braking.i get onto my cb and ask him if he has any problems.he comes onto the cb and tells he has pain in his chest and his right arm.i was SHOCKED..i told him to move over to the shoulder and i too got down.i was ahead of my schedule so could spare some time.i went upto his truck and he was all sweaty.i asked him if he was on medication.he just nodded sideways..couldnt make heads or tails and decided to call 911.so an ambulance comes up in a short time and takes him to the hospital.the paramedics were giving me indications that he might have suffered a stroke.so guys when u have some discomfort better stop your truck and if it gets serious call 911 and they will connect you to an emergency dispatch.be careful out there guys.people will second guess to stop for someone which i find un humanitarian.

Great story, jeff. You probably saved his life and might have saved some others, as well. That's what truckers are s'posed to do - look out for each other. Drivers like you prove that there's still hope for the future.

A car is what...20 feet? So 4 car lengths means 80 feet. At 55 mph, you're travel 80 feet every second, so you're basically telling me you're only maintaining a 1 second following distance....which is HALF of what you were taught in driver's ed class back in high school, and when you started driving larger vehicles you were probably taught 1 second for every 10 feet of vehicle length, with an extra second for speeds above 40 mph. In other words, you were tailgating. Even if you had been in a car, you STILL would have been following too close...but you weren't in a car. You were driving a truck. You should have had 30 car lengths (7 to 8 seconds) between you and the truck ahead of you, not 4 car lengths (1 second).
