Hello, new to the forum, not to trucking though. We’re buying my first reefer trailer to try some loads, is there a certain year that we can purchase to make sure that we don’t need any future updates or upgrades for the California EPA carb compliance? To the best of my research ability it looks like possibly 2010 or 2013?? Found a lot of information on what year refers have to be compliant by what year, but not what year does not need any future updates for the tier 4.
There is very little definitive information as far as what year the manufacturers had to have full compliance by for ultra low emissions.

As an example, if I buy a 2013 and newer reefer unit, will it need any updates for compliance? Or would it be good to go because it was made to fully comply?

    makterna Thanks this.

If you buy a TK Precedent S series unit they are evergreen and good for life in California because they are electronic injection. The Precedent C series are seven years compliant as they are mechanical injection.Of course the disadvantage of electronic injection is that it is a much more complex fuel system(egr valve, ecu, sensors, etc.) When it comes to diesel it doesn't get any simpler then mechanical injection.
I used to know a guy who ran an old TK Whisper in California and said he never had a problem with the emissions guys out there.

From what I remember, on a new reefer trailer there are two versions that relate to California CARB laws. One option will be compliant in CA for 7 years from the bill of sale date. The 2nd option will be compliant past the 7 years but costs a few thousand dollars more. Now, a trailer past the 7 years can be upgraded so you can continue taking it to CA, but we’re probably looking at several thousands of dollars.

Sale date has nothing to do with the compliance. Actual motor year is what they go by.

It would suck to buy a new one year old reefer when a year is already gone. It “should” be from the date the new reefer was sold, but I’m certain that’s too much work to add in the CA CARB laws.

Pretty easy to have say a 2016 trailer and a 2016 unit that the motor is a 2015. TK/Carrier doesn't just throw away the motor's they have when a new year model comes out. Just went through it with an O/O that thought their unit was good another year but it expired at the end of december.
When you go for an ARB# and put in the motor serial# it gives you the end date.

Seems like a lot of hassle for cheap rates .. unless you got something locked up or only go during the busy season a lot of trucks compete for the same freight it seems ..

So I looked at my ARB document and surprisingly my compliance date ends in 12/31/2026. Maybe I did something wrong when registering my reefer because that’s like 8 years and a few months. I may have to give CA a call on Monday. My TK reefer is listed in the ARB document as a 2018, but the engine year is 2019. The trailer itself is a 2019. I got the trailer mid 2018.
