No problem, just thought I’d mention it.

That’s a common misconception among those who are new to the night shift.

Look at rental companies. I work for one making a little over 29 an hour with OT after 40. I’m guaranteed 40 hours but I’m usually always working 50. I have to ask to get off early if I want an 8 hour day. Get all the regular holidays and 16 day vacation right know and will keep going up to 25 days when I get the years in.

Is that local? See thats not bad. I dont mind 10 hour days and at almost 30 an hour your OT rate is what? 45 an hour?!? Your prolly making 80k a year or so and home every night?

####. I work in Security and I make 12. My OT rate is 18 and no benefits or other perks. The highest I made one year was 35k. Before that, its usually arpund 25k a year. A disgrace IMO.

What path should I take to find something like that? I guess for starters Id need to do a CDL refresher to get my CDL active again and then what? OTR (maybe regional) for 6 months to 2 years before I come back and find something local? Is that about right?

I understand. Me and my overnight people always say its nice to have the whole day to choose when to sleep. You basically have 16 hours with the sun up and everything open so you can sleep whenever and have more flexability.

10 hour days line haul? Sign me up. Everybody I talk to it's more like 14+ if you count the commute. Talk about a contrast. Going from security guard to driver. The difference between boredom and fatigue. Plus people tend die if you fall asleep and within seconds. It pays well because you have to take your A game to work everyday. Failure to do so can and will result in prison or death. No joke.

Yes it’s local. I started with a construction company running a horizontal drill rig putting in underground utilities. I had to haul the rig everywhere we went. Then I moved to a rental company running a crane truck and when the spot opened up I started hauling equipment for them. Now mind you the construction company I worked for didn’t pay for sh** but it gave me the experience to move on. I’m off every night and the weekends. I was always told if you want to do local then start local and vice versa. You might not make what you want when you start but if you keep your eyes and ears open and your CDL clean you can find good paying jobs locally.

Congrats on obtaining, or getting close to obtaining, a bachelor’s degree! That’s a lot of work in itself.

As @Chinatown has already mentioned, Estes is a great company to look into, especially if you want an LTL Carrier. It’s a family-owned, debt-free company. Plus, you’ve got options.

if you sign-on with Estes without your CDL, you can start in the shop, office, or dock. Work in that position for 90 days. After 90 days, you qualify for their free driving school, it’s free with a 2-year commitment.

if you join Estes with a CDL, you need 1 year of experience. Three endorsements on your license: doubles/triples, hazmat, and tanker.

Estes will keep you regional - no further than 2 days from your home terminal. Also, it’s 5 on, 2 off. Not a 34.

The money for this regional position will pay $92-97k your first year. You will get a two-and-a-half cent raise each year, for three years. Plus, you get an annual cost-of-living raise every year. Starting pay is around 63 cents-per-mile, and after three years, your pay will be 72 cents-per-mile (as of 2020).

If you’d rather run local, during the day, off at night, home every weekend, then you should consider the P&D position. It pays $23-29/hr. Nine raises in three years, just like Extraboard/Linehaul, only the pay is hourly, and you run locally - loading and unloading freight by hand to customers. The yearly pay for this position is $75-80k.

If you get 6 months experience and then want to go to a South Jersey-based company, Elite Express in Pennsauken is a great option. They haul primarily LTL and have both a local fleet and an OTR fleet.
