    I'm thinking of buying a truck with a1998-99 n 14 one has a red top the others doesn't the miles on the redtop is 700000 and the other 800000
    So I figured I will need a overhaul sooner or later no matter witch one I go with

    So my question is is it worth having these engines overhaul and if so which one should I go with

    Second question is what are some details about these engine that I should know about before buying one

    You really can't go wrong with anything pre-EGR.

    Yea that why in trying to find older truck so i can go over them get it everything it need and hit the road once it truly ready

    N-14 I bought at 963,000 went to 1.3 before I sold it - it’s still running, rods and mains replaced at a million.

    Oil sample it , dyno would be worth it too. Rig Dig.

    Great motor. They like clean fuel,otherwise you’ll get good at changing injectors. They don’t like making big power for very long. If you want longevity stay at 1850 torque or less. @Bakerman

    The n-14 red top in my 97 had the heads freshened at a million. It s got a million 175 on it now.

    Starts right up in 20 degree weather with no smoke . Doesn't smoke going through the gears.

    Last oil sample came back spectacular, in fact a comment was made nice engine for the miles .

    I want to mention these both got wet kit so Im guessing high idle time on them would that effect it that much?

    Off the top of my head, I think they were 460hp max, but google probably can tell you better.
