Since we are talking about fresh produce.....

why do the fresh strawberries always look like crap at the grocery store..? It seems like if you don’t use them in a day or two you have to throw them away.....

 

You are way way way too late. Think February, March and maybe early April.

 

Good quality and fresh strawberries have an extremely short shelf life, especially if they aren't refrigerated. Most of those bought out here in California from the supermarket chains are genetically modified to resist frost, and last on the shelves longer, but they taste horrible. The best berries are bought from local growers and are old established varieties without genetic modifications. Put them in the fridge when you get home and they'll last 2-3 days, or wash them, cut the tops off and put them in a bowl with a little sugar and they'll last up to 7 days. You can also freeze fresh strawberries (after cleaning and trimming) for a few months and they taste just as good after they're thawed out. I use to freeze big fresh strawberries from our garden when I was a kid and eat them year round.

 

Need some input from you guys......had a new venture owner operator (new DOT#) hauling a reefer trailer, put on his application that he would generate $ 300,000 in gross revenue over 12 months. Given the rates I see you all discussing and given HOS that seems like a larger than I would have expected revenue projection. Is that doable out of CA?

 

A new O/O can't generate that kind of money unless he has established contract freight, which most new O/O's don't have. Sounds like wishful thinking. Drivers who have been doing this for years can do that and more.
