So I bought a truck to help my other business out. That business rents manned cranes to our customers, and since we use only crawler cranes, we have to pay to have them moved. It's usually around 4-5k to move them only a few miles with a heavy haul and 2-3 flat/step decks for the weights and boom sections. My plan is to still hire out the heavy haul, buy or rent a couple of used flats/steps, and shuttle the fall off loads myself. basically paying myself the other 2-3k everything we move them, and eventually the truck would pay for itself and be a "back-up plan" for later on, plus I've always wanted one anyway.

I'm in the process of getting my own authority and although doable, it doesn't make sense to spend that munch money if I don't have to since I won't be running all the time.

How do you find a small company to lease onto? A little mom and pop type place to lease onto and to help out when they needed? Is this even possible?

How many moves do you do in a week?

A long long time ago, you could lease to Jones Motor and still haul anything you wanted, but had to send in paperwork to them, they paid you.
RKCampf was another good flatbed company I worked with back in the day.

Couple times a month, well before the oilfield took a ####...

Also have another venture that I’d move a couple a month fir as well. Then whatever random stuff I find around the house. Not exactly looking to “make money”, more just pay for itself of course anything extra is just icing in the cake. I do very well with the crane business, so this was more just to pay myself for moves on the side. Hope that makes sense.

If you don't find anybody to lease onto and you go it alone, have you checked how much insurance will cost you. It will be pretty hefty for a new entrant.

Yes sir...it’s doable but I’d rather not. I know a couple people I can talk to that have their own numbers, but I didn’t know if there was a company that would just charge a percentage and let you do your own thing.

    rachi Thanks this.

If you get your own authority you wont be handcuffed to the company you lease onto and then maybe at some point you could put a driver on to move other companies cranes as well. When you lease on with a company you will have to abide by there own company saftey rules, company inspections, and their log department wether it be Elogs or paper.
