Hi,
How much is too much time spent at the shipper trying to secure your load? My trainer kept riding my ### about how slow I was, which imo should be expected since I’m green as heck with all this and I guess I’m just worried I’m gonna take too long or something and run my clock down too much. He was a bit insulting when he said he’d give me 3 hours to throw my straps, roll out my tarps and bungee them down.
Best regards, John

Get it done right, no mater how long it takes you at 1st, after a bit it will get much faster.
Corfu, Truckermania, autopaint and 10 others Thank this. -
He should be teaching you and pointing what you do wrong instead of insulting ....if he is your trainer
Corfu, Brettj3876, booley and 7 others Thank this. -

It really depends on what you're hauling too. I can secure a 45,000 pound coil in less than 15 minutes. Square tube used to take 1 hour including securing the tarp that was already on. Mixed Menards lumber takes me half an hour, if not tarping.

A few minutes extra at the beginning on securement, could save you a lot of headaches later.
After you tie it down step back and ask yourself, will it ride?
Am I happy with it?
If not add another strap/chain.
Those will do no good in the headache rack or side box.
I tie my loads down different than most, say you got 40 ft steel beams, sitting on 5 boards, I’d put one chain in front of the board, one behind the board, that way it pulls the load to the board, less likely to “walk” out and throw boards at people.
There’s a very old picture, they used to take photos of their loads there at Afco steel, was putting edge protectors on -
