I had 2 very large customers today tell me they are going to begin building their own fleets due to skyrocketing trucking rates. History always repeats itself. I saw the same thing happen a few years ago and within 6 months the bottom started dropping out on truckload rates. Save your money now, so when the bottom drops out everyone won’t have to drive their trucks to the White House and whine to President Trump about unfair rates.

They'll end up going bankrupt trying to save a few pennies.
Midwest Trucker, KB3MMX, magoo68 and 4 others Thank this. -
that was my last employer, for a price, they supplied everything for the customer. i don't know what the bottom line was, but my employer was locked in at the negotiated price for like 3 years.KB3MMX Thanks this. -
Those big companies have forgotten how much money, time, and aggravation a private fleet will cost them.
They better let their bean counters cost it out before they make a decision.
Look at the history of trucking...there are very few big private fleets anymore.Midwest Trucker, KB3MMX, Coffey and 2 others Thank this. -
private fleets are a better employer in my book.
I've driven for a manufacturer, it was great.truckguy391 Thanks this. -
There is a happy medium.
Start your private fleet then you can compare costs to each other. You can compare all kinds of variables that way.KB3MMX Thanks this. -
A lot of these big companies are tired of the piss poor service these trucking companies have. When you have your own private fleet you have a lot more control. Why do you think Walmart wants to hire more drivers?

I work for a medium size public carrier. Picked up for us a newer account at a very large public company. While picking up I started chatting with one of there drivers. He hands me his driver referral card with his recruiter in it and says check us out we are hiring .... I said don’t they take really good care of you guys ? Yep , real good care of us !!! But he said we can’t find enough drivers. No matter what we pay and do we always need more drivers , can never find enough. Strange

The problem with private fleets is expenses are always there even when the revenue isn’t. I worked for a lumber company that had a few tuck and had an in-house owner operator and trucks leased to him. Company trucks first owner operators second. Keep expenses shallow.
