The whole drug test thing is a joke anyway. They give you almost 3 months to clean up before you have to take the test and if you don’t want to take it you can send an alternate

    What I've learned.
As a CDL driver you are not required to register w the clearinghouse but will need to submit consent for the queries that are required annually by your motor carrier, or you as a o/o on yourself, and/or any potential carriers you may apply to.

Yes you are required to register as a motor carrier and pay ($1.25 per) to perform an annual inquiry on yourself, and any driver you employ.

In addition, the consent allows you to inquire of your own record.
My company will have a 3rd party firm do the required annual inquiries and need electronic authorization or cell # for this so our drivers will just open a gmail acct solely for this purpose...Gotta think there's drivers still running that don't do computers or smart phones.
I used my .Gov acct to register, and used my mailing address as preferred form of communication, but will not provide the 3rd party firm with anything but a one off email address so they can inform me of my annual inquiry results.

If a driver decides to change jobs he has to be registered because his prospective employer is required to run a full query on him.
Are CDL drivers required to register for the Clearinghouse?
Drivers are not required to register for the Clearinghouse. However, a driver will need to be registered to provide electronic consent in the Clearinghouse if a prospective or current employer needs to conduct a full query of the driver’s Clearinghouse record—this includes all pre-employment queries.

Basically you are not required to register but are required to be registered because you cannot consent any way but electronically?

You are not required to register except...
    1. New hire.
    2. A hit on the yearly and need a full query,

For the yearly, you just need to sign a paper document the company tosses in your driver file. Of course with the turnover rate in this industry most people will have to in a couple years thinks to job hopping.
