Call the receiver. Let them know what the headache is. At least then they will know why the load may be late. Or they will figure a way to get it there.

If your an owner operator, you cant receive detention fees. Detention and lay over fees are for company drivers. IE you would call the driver manager and tell them the load is undeliverable because the border guards arent letting you through. The company would then tell you if you were to get pay for the time you wait. In 2008 it was $50 a day for layover pay. Barely enough for a hotel room in some places. The company would then get you through.

As an owner operator, it is a fee you get to swallow as your dealing with the broker directly. Tho dont hound the broker. You can make them twice glad. Glad to see you get the load. Glad they wont give you a load in the future

 

You are not correct about detention or redirect charges.
To the OP - you need to contact the customer that is shipping the product or the the receiver getting the product to get in touch with the customs broker arranging the import into Canada.
You as the carrier need to have a PARS number to be included in the import paperwork to set up EManifest clearance to cross the border. The Emanifest is done by the customers customs broker but includes your company and truck information along with which border crossing and the approx day and time of the crossing.

mid you do not have a company PARS number and the appropriate bar code (serialized your code plus a sequential number) you will not be able to cross and it will have to be taken by a carrier with the proper credentials

 

Don't take loads into Canada.
It ain't worth the hassle.

Switching with another driver doesn't solve
Anything if the paperwork is not right.

Is it the load paperwork or is it the driver? Canada is fussy about driver's credentials, Manitoba considers a DWI a felony, and convicted felons cannot drive a commercial vehicle in Manitoba.

 

You NEVER show up the border on either side empty or loaded without preclearing it.. your lucky you didn’t get fined
