Going to be getting borderline political, but yeah.. I do feel like things are generally opressive along with the double standards.. it's like you expressed.. one person that burns buildings down and commits multiple assults gets off Scott free.. Meantime someone else goes to prision for life without parole for selling drugs.

 

I would agree with that but back then my parents would not have.

As far as they were concerned back then our country was on fire and everything they held dear about USA was being destroyed. This is coming from my WW2 Vet Dad.

Fast forward to today and now that us kids are all grown up many of us are saying the same things as he did back then.

My Dad thought the hippies were going to destroy the world and I thought he was nuts. Many of those hippies never grew up and are now career politicians and I can now see that Dad was right.

 

I have to say times were a little simpler back then-to an extent.
When I was born (1977) a certain “peanut farmer from Georgia” was commander-in-chief!

You know you’re old when AARP starts sending you stuff in the mail!!(WTF??) When they started doing that I was only 36,I’m 43 now. My wife will be 47 in a week-all she gets is Publishers Clearing House!!!

 

I sort of miss the '70's, back when black rifles with 30 shot mags weren't generally considered to be "sporting" rifles. I had a Model 1917 Eddystone '06, with iron peeps. It weighed almost as much as I did.

 

There wasn't much terrorism as defined today. There was the Vietnam draft lottery. There were the weekly dead and wounded counts on the nightly news. There were protests then too.

Sometimes in the 70s meant waiting 4 hours in line to buy gas, and 55 mph speed limits. But I also remember "gas wars" where you could get gas for 10 or 11 cents a gallon in California. 12 mpg in cars, 3 or 4 mpg in a truck.

If a cattle pot was loaded, it was doing 80 in that 55 zone on its way to the packing house, and was usually a cabover. Followed by a big cloud of dust.

Get caught going 20 or 25 over the speed limit didn't always mean a ticket. A lot of times it was "slow her down, son and get home safe". Even if you got a ticket, it'd be for $38 and your insurance didnt get jacked up or cancelled.

Passing someone on the right, no "ifs, ands, or buts" - you were getting a ticket.

Get caught cruising around with 3 buddies and a 12 pack, it was "give me that beer boys, and go home now". Now its probably a felony.

EVERYTHINGS a felony now. In the 70s, you had to do something majorly big and bad to get hung with a felony.

Truckstops meant the best food in the county. McDonalds and others were just getting started.

There were very few gun laws then, and people were still respectful with guns. If you had guns, you would have either had a 12 ga. or a 20 ga shotgun, and maybe a .22 rifle.

There was none of the "show me your ID" ######## then. It was settled when they'd ask you what your name and address were. And in smaller places, people trusted each other then. Unless they knew you couldn't be trusted and everyone knew who those few people were.

Cash or check. Weren't many credit cards out yet. Truckers usually carried a big wad of cash.

If you wanted to buy something they didn't have, you would need to wait until they ordered and got it in, or go to bigger city "next weekend", or do without. Once you got to that bigger place, there was nowhere other than KMart or Sears or JC Penneys to look once you got there. There was very little "Immediate Gratification".

But, now, you can get almost anything you want, in any color, no later than tomorrow.

70s ain't any better than now, just different.

 

I’m going to go ahead and disagree with you on this, for obvious reasons. But also I have family in California and their biggest complaint is the reclassification of crimes that used to be felonies to misdemeanors which in turn is increasing the crime rate.

people speaking of the 70s as being a “better” time are speaking through nostalgic glasses. The fact is times have never been better, the reason it seems like things are worse now is because you’re more informed now than you’ve ever been. Every event from around the globe is at your finger tips, not so in the 70s. So of course when you’re looking at the news every minute of the day things seem crazy. But in reality things are much better
