A guy I know in GA pulling a dump grossed $195k for 2019. That was with about 2 months off scattered through the year for family stuff, truck breakdowns, etc.

His usual net check was around $2700-$2800 and went home every other week.

Random question, does Oakley require their drivers to govern their trucks? It seems like the last few I’ve come across are running under the posted speed limit.
Also, what exactly does the appearance standard entail? Do they go as far as UPS and not allow visible tattoos?

I guess my question is: End Dump or Tank?

I don’t mind staying out 4-6 weeks, taking 12-14 days off; but, what are the checks going to be? How many miles can I run? I was expecting, since I had planned to stay out that long, at least 3,200-3,500+ miles each week that I was out, except for that last week.

I see in this forum that one guy on end dump only grossed $195k one year, only took 2 months off total for the year.

A tanker guy stated he averaged 2,300 miles per week, over the course of 52 weeks. Only a few times did he net over $5k per week, and took in a net income of $1k per week more times than that.

Based on these two hands, I guess end dump is the better paying job? I’m not really sure. I’ve been listening to the podcast and trying to keep up with this company on YouTube, and TTR, but I’m still quite confused on what I think i want.

I live near Little Rock, AR.

Unless you have 6 months tank experience, you're not doing tank. Dry bulk can be a real #####.

When I talked to them they said end dump averaged $2600-$2700 a week.

The way the recruiter acted it seemed they wanted control over the hometime as well. I wanted to do 10/4 and the recruiter piped in it would probably be 11/3. Keep in mind I'm in a area where they say I could be home every weekend, and apparently that wasn't gonna happen either.

I didnt think it made sense financially and from freedom point of view. They talk a good game on their podcast but I found reality a bit different. YMMV.

I do one week home for every four weeks out. I have not, and will never work 52 weeks. I have a family and #### to do.

I do my best not to gross over $200k. I have no want need, nor desire to be in the 22% tax bracket.

My goal is 2100mi a week. After deductions (which includes $500 savings account) my settlement is normally $3k.

From the $3k I use $1300 for payroll which nets me $1001 to my bank account and then I transfer another $250, so over the course of four weeks I would have netted $5k, and I would have paid taxes on $4004 of it.

The other seven sits in the bank so I can run payroll while I'm on home time which can stretch out to a full month sometimes.

Do you have an option to make more? You want 2,100 miles/week, but can you get plenty of miles if you want them, or no?

If that setup works for you, then it sounds great to me. I’d just like to hold onto 30% for tax purposes, and whatever I don’t spend out of that by tax time, I can put into 401k. Plus, I’d like to hold onto enough money for my personal bank account and enough to buy a new truck within 4 years.

I guess I’m not sure if I’d be making enough to do what I’ve got planned, but if the chance to make more money is plausible, then I’d be interested.

I don’t currently have any experience pulling tanks, but I could gain six months before coming over if that’s a problem? I’m not sure yet.

I can make more, but I have my routine setup so I don't owe taxes at the end of the year and I get to "stash" $25k.

If I make more, it would put me into a higher tax bracket. As of now, if I pay myself $1300, I get to keep $1001 of it (gets direct deposited into my personal bank account), $291 goes to the IRS for taxes.

If I move into the next tax bracket, out of that $1300 for payroll I'd only get to keep about $750/$800 and the rest will go to the IRS.

The brackets go 10%,12%,22%,24%. I'm currently in the 12% bracket. That 10% leap into the next bracket isn't worth it for me.

Gotcha! I was planning to withhold 30% for tax purposes, which is actually more than I withhold now, but I did contact Oakley through Facebook. The person told me that I could run 3,000 miles/week, based on my preference to stay out 4-6 weeks. I was also told the average gross for their O/O was $210k. So I’m pretty happy to hear that.

I’ve not met anyone who works for them who just truly hates working there, but There May be a few. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I have a few financial dealings to take care of before I can save up for a truck, but I think Oakley would be a good fit. Even if I go the route of making a little less each year, I think I’ll be happier.

Oakley does not require you to govern your truck. That is also going to be in the new guidelines to establish between independent contractor and W2 employee, so they never will.

Your appearance is to be clean shaven, except for a mustache (that does not go below the lips) if you want one. No beards, goatees or chops. I couldn’t say for Oakley on what the tattoo policy is, but it would be a safe assumption to say no visible tattoos. A good button down shirt or good T shirt tucked into a pair of good jeans or work pants and sturdy (read: steel toe) work boots is pretty much mandatory.

Both of these recollections you have were from me. Now, I have not pulled dump for Oakley. I have pulled tank and currently pull a hopper. Back when I did tank, that was before the pay raises and CSA pay. I make now on hopper what I did when I first started on pulling a tank. Running like I did when I pulled a tank, I’d likely be netting 3600-3800 a week fairly easy right now. With a hopper, I average about 2700. Many dump guys fall squarely between that. About 3000 net a week.

I stay out anywhere from 1-5 weeks right now. We’ve been very fortunate to stay busy during these times. If you can run long, you can make good money in any division. There will be weeks in any division though that will make you wonder why you ever even bothered, but that is the way it happens sometimes.

Running like I do right now, I could probably make more on either end dump or a tank. But it would likely not be enough to convince me to swap.

Oakley does not control your home time. That is solely the owner operator’s decision. Now, they may need trucks at certain times more than others, especially on weekends, but they cannot force you to not take home time. If you want to go home every weekend, you can. It may or may not be good for paychecks, but that is something between an owner operator and his dispatcher.

You realize you’d only pay 22% on the income you make over the 22% bracket, right? Depending on what you make, your highest bracket could be 22%, but your effective tax rate would be lower still. Like 15-16% effective tax rate.
