Good morning I have a question for everyone, I've been trucking now for about 10 years and I'm thinking about swapping my license from NY to PA. My question is if I do that would the abstract from NY be valid on the new PA license or are abstracts only specific to the state where you receive violation?

But yeah, your cdl is a federally regulated license so moving to a different state won't do you any good.

What violation are you trying to hide anyway?

I recently send for a copy of my DAC. I have NOT held a CDL now for many years. I have not driven a CMV since Dec of 2012. I still can see my Georgia CDL on that DAC. For the purposes of several FMCSA rules, ALL your CDLs are going to follow you. The violations will fall off over time. @Kyle G. nailed it, CDLs are State issued but Federally regulated. Not only that, but I have heard (NOT CONFIRMED) that even if you move to Canada from the US that CDL will follow you as will the driving record. You can't escape 21st-century tech!

depending on the service running the MVR for the carrier, most now show 'out of state' information...

    i.e. "NY CDL surrendered 09/29/2020".....

The motor carrier is supposed to run ALL prior MVRs.

Since PA and NJ do not usually cooperate; guys used to 'move' to PA to hide excessive points -or- DUI convictions in NJ.

Don't be the guy who thought he was slick; a while after leaving, calls the owner saying he wants to return.

I get told to run the guy and rescue his former file from the box and run his NJ license number.

I get my MVR's through my insurance broker and up pops a DUI a few months before he left [worked until the conviction suspended his privileges] and he shows up [already rejected] with a PA license that we didn't run. D'Oh!

Yeah that answers the question! Thank you. I recently got a phone ticket here in NY (5 Points) but PA doesn't have a point system on that law. But as you said abstracts are only specific to the state your licensed in.

Probably just moving to get away from high taxes. That's my guess.

I'm not so sure about that. I once got a failure to observe road sign ticket in PA which carried no points. Florida DMV tacked 3 points on my license because that violation carries 3 points in Florida.
