Mixing synthetic gear oil with regular

    When what is my rears I put full synthetic in the other I put regular gear oil because I wanted to run it for a while and then flush it.

    Well it turns out that I got mixed up and I added some regular gear oil to the synthetic.

    I'm sure I added less than half a gallon probably more like a quarter I guess or 1/3 but should that be drained and put all synthetic in?

    Yes, you can safely mix synthetic and conventional oil. ... In the end, conventional and synthetic oils are completely compatible. However while you can safely mix synthetic and conventional oils, you're diluting the performance of the synthetic oil.

    All engine oil have regular synthetic and synthetic blend, I know you are talking about gear oil but it will be fine, funny thing is that shells rotella.oil their blend gets the best fuel economy of their 3 oils

    Not all synthetic gear oil is compatible, PAO based synthetic will blend with conventional oils, polyglycol based will not blend

    Searching that can lead to a long study. Short study appears that is normally used in the food industry?
    Never saw or heard of a problem mixing common petroleum and synthetic truck oils. Told that a little petroleum in synthetic losses all the synthetic advantages.
    Petroleum and mineral oil makes mud. Have heard and seen that.
    Have no idea what synthetic and mineral oil makes.
    If in doubt change it out.

    I just looked at the pale for the synthetic oil and all that it says is that it is a petroleum product.

    I'll have to take a look on the bottle of actual regular gear oil but I can't imagine they're not compatible.

    Yet oddly enough I'll probably run the truck as it is for now but change it with the next greasing.

    When I worked for a fleet in the early 80's they used synthetic gear oil. Said Rockwell warrantied trans and rears for 750,000 miles with synthetic oil except for abuse.
    That oil was orange to red colored and had a distinct smell.
    Rules for synthetic have changed. I have had new buckets that the oil was dark and smelled like the oil out of a 40 year old diff. I changed suppliers.
    The oil I am using now is almost clear, labeled for all the specs and about $105.00 for 5 gallons.

    Synthetic oil is petroleum oil,difference is the refining and additives,
