Fifth wheel jaws, or any mechanical parts that keep the jaws locked can break anytime.
Nothing a driver can do when it happens.
Though that is very rare.mjd4277, Badmon, Flat Earth Trucker and 4 others Thank this. -
That being said , one of our competitors had two in one week. One of them involved a fatality and the other resulted in major injuries. Both times the load of lumber came loose and either hit or was hit by cars. Both times happened at night.
Both happened within a week of each other and both were investigated by a team of CHPs. Both instances were traced back to lack of maintenance. Both had excessive wear and signs of previous unrepaired damage and abuse.
When all the fines, lawsuits and settlements were over we had one less competitor. He filed bankruptcy, closed his doors, and the last I heard he was working in a 7-11.Bud A., Dale thompson, Sirscrapntruckalot and 5 others Thank this.
