I have kids, and I agree, it changes your perspective. When I was single, screaming kids irritated me. Now, I feel bad for the parent and want to rush over to help.

Having said that, I do have some flexibility in my thinking over this topic. However, I just ran into the OPs same situation. The broker was on vacation with his grandkids. Good for him! But, don't you think it would have been appropriate to let a colleague answer the phones and do the job while you're on vacation? If you take time off, be off. Even if it's just you. Press the pause button and don't post any loads while you are on vacation.

With the background noise, I too find it distracting and don't appreciate it when I don't have someone's full attention. I think the answer is to establish "daddy is on a work call and we have to be quiet." I also think if you are working from home, you need to create a "business area" that you go to handle the calls and give the caller your attention.

An occasional dog bark or kid scream is okay. That's life at home. But a non-stop interruption is not appropriate. There's a reasonable middle-ground to be had here.

 

The children. My God the children MUST be protected.

What kind of parents expose their children to freight brokers at such a young age????

The best course of action imo is to call child protective services.

The children, the BABY'S, are exposed to stress, and foul language, and Ill feeling.

Yep. CPS from now on. Do the right thing for THE CHILDREN.

 

Usually, what I do when I take a call after hours, or have something come up- my kid is too young to really get the "Daddy's on the phone, be quiet- is step out of the room, or step outside, and let my wife know that I have something work related up. It happens frequently enough that she's pretty good about handling that.

We had a dispatcher that worked from home and had one of those yappy dogs. I lost it one night and told her to shut that #### dog up. I am trying to communicate with you.

 

Brokers= Bend over.

 

we get calls daily from carrier companies with screaming kids ( and adults.....) in the background. GET OVER IT. people are unprofessional, people work from home, now more than ever.

so much complaining about the littlest of things.
