Have a Cat C13 in the shop, another guy is working on it, will not start without ether. Once started it will run on it's own but will not accelerate(only gets up to 1000 rpms). Once you shut it off, it will not start again until you shoot it with ether. Doesn't have a primer pump so... We checked the check fuel pressure regulator on the bottom of the fuel filter housing by swapping it with another known good one, no change. No external leaks have been found. Also bypassed the tank and supply line by sucking out of a 5 gl bucket, ran fine and sucked the fuel right up. Any suggestions on what to try next? Thanks!

Did it start from the fuel in the 5 gallon bucket?

Fuel line may have collapsed, Most times you see rubber in filter, but not always.

Are you using a fuel pressure gauge at the "compucheck" fitting? You should see around 65psi fuel pressure cranking.
Next, disconnect the return fuel line and install a sight glass (or clear piece of hose to a bucket) and start the engine. Are there any large air bubbles showing in the return fuel (indicating a suction side leak)?

No, still had to use ether. Not sure if he found any rubber or even looked. Will ask Monday.

I’m pretty sure he didn’t put a gauge on it. Will be pointing him in this direction Monday. Thanks for the reply.

Does the RPM gauge register rpm while cranking? If not it is a sign of a bad Camshaft position sensor.

Also you want to verify that the coolant gauge is reading correctly (if the coolant sensor was "stuck" at 190 degrees, for example, the engine would be hard to start in 30 degree weather, and a code would not be set).

Lastly, you can test that the fuel injectors are receiving voltage to fire by using an inductive voltage tester (for checking for AC voltage). This tool looks like a pencil shaped device with an led light that lights up when you touch the tip of the tool to a wire with current running through it.

Wonder what your compression will be like after all that ether. Its pretty bad stuff.
