Fluid leak help.

    Hello all, I just purchased a 01 4700 and the drivers side front wheel I have a leak of some sort. The whole inside of the rim is covered in oil of some sort and it’s leaking and leaving a puddle right below the caliper? Not sure about the terminology. Just looking to see if someone could help point me in the right direction to track down the leak.

    Dumb question as I don’t know very much, If it was a wheel seal, wouldn’t it be leaking on the outside? Before I picked it up the brakes were just done as well, so I was thinking it could have been related to that

    Nope. Wheel seal is on the inside. Hubcap is on the outside.

    Thanks, I’m going to have to look into it a bit more to confirm that it is the seal. But I’m not sure what else it could be.Will I be able to drive it somewhere to get it fixed?

    I always like to take a leak next to a buddies rig then tell them it looks like they have a fluid leak.
    Stand back and watch them rub the mystery fluid between two fingers and smell it in an attempt to identify it.
    Not sure if that helps but thought I'd share...
    Almost certainly a wheel seal like he said. Cheap and easy fix. Good time to inspect brakes and wheel bearings.

    A wheel seal looks like It’s a cheap and easy fix, unfortunately I don’t have the tools or the know how to do it in my driveway otherwise I’d attempt it!

    Typically the tools cost more than the parts. You'll be money ahead to buy the tools for it because it's a common failure and huge savings to do it and your brakes yourself.

    Don’t drive it too far - at all.

    Top it up through the little cap, and get her fixed quickly.

    Likely your shoes will be soaked - replace them.

    How many miles on this leak?

    I know I need to buy the tools, certainly on the list. Even if I got the tools, not sure it’s something I’d be confident doing in my driveway, if I mess it up it’s gonna cost a bit to get it towed somewhere to be fixed
