Want to get experienced OO input on truck specs. I’ve been researching this and this is what I’m coming up with and don’t know if it’s way off or not.

After doing research as a OO I would leani towards purchasing a 2007 or older Freightliner with a Detroit series 60 and a Eaton Fuller trans. I realize it won’t be able to run California.

I think for $40-$45k you can get into a truck including the cost of the truck and necessary repairs after purchase.

A big reason why I would lean towards this is no DPF and the cost of repairs and parts to be a lot more less costly and the availability of repair shops on the road that could repair this truck without having to go to a dealership.

I also found out with the right trans and how you run the truck you can get decent MPG which fuel being the biggest expense. Heck if you really need a motor down the road looks like you can get a rebuilt Detroit series 60 for about $10k including labor.

Why I would lean towards this is because of having no debt or little debt which is going to be a truck payment. Won’t be the prettiest truck but it’s about making money right?

Am I off base here? Thanks!

Sounds reasonable. It really helps if you can do a lot of the small repairs yourself. Shop rates are getting expensive.
In-frame on that motor is under $20k, without truck payments you should be able to save a substantial repair fund.

Thanks! If one had a nice repair fund they could spend $20k without blinking an eye. If that was me I wouldn’t be like #### I got to spend this. In fact if I had a substantial repair fund it wouldn’t bother me. The problem in this case is how long will you be off the road for with an in frame?

Or, buy a newer truck, and when it needs an inframe just swap out the engine for the preemissions engine of your choice.

I had one done on two different trucks, ten days for one, 11 days for the other. That includes the first day or two of diagnosis and decision making to go with the in-frame.

Hypothetically if I ran at 2 cents a mile 2k miles a week, how much is suggested to put in a maintenance fund? And how much would you want initially in a maintenance fund?

Another note I’m in Philly and the short haul market is good but that would be more wear and tear.

    I’m figuring if I can get 7 MPG that’s about $900 fuel.

    Thanks!

not legal unless the title starts with GL......

watch your costs and just keep putting what you can away, when you get to the end of the year you can decide and see how much you want to spend to put back into it or pay taxes.

was down for a total of 3 weeks to inframe my n14 but did a bunch of other work to it as well

I’m figuring 25 cents a mile for maintenance which would be $25k a year. And about 50 cents a mile for fuel if I can get 7 MPG.

    blairandgretchen Thanks this.

You’re one of the few I see here that are actually thinking about costs and maintenance.

We went 30cpm maintenance, 15 cpm equipment upgrade, 10% right off the top into a tax account - 40cpm to pay driver (me).

Run 4 or 5 separate accounts.

If short haul miles, you may need to adjust this somehow - percentage perhaps.
