While I haven't experienced this myself I do find it entertaining to read the broker reviews on the DAT loadboard. Unfortunately it seems that rudeness is a common occurrence with many broker agents. I get that sometimes we all have a bad day, but these are business calls, each person has something to gain by the conversation, so where does the rudeness come into play? If you're unable to reach an agreement then it's a simple "have a nice day". Now I know drivers are guilty of this too but I'd like to hear some of your stories of calls that started off fine then went south, or calls that were just plain terrible from the start, or calls that just had you completely confused by the attitude of the broker. Did you give them the same treatment? Did you still haul the load? Did you just hang up? How did you handle the situation?

The best one i know of was a broker response to the rate, "are you trying to pay for a new mobile home?"

Still laugh every time i hear the brokerage name.

I don't see that as much....Most of the time a semblance of civility is retained. But on a rare occasion, it does discourage me when I sense an element of rudeness or some undeserved attitude. I'd rather not haul for such a person out of concern that it may only get worse once I am committed to a load. If someone is rude to me I'll return the rudeness twice as much and an undesirable situation may escalate quickly.
Unfortunately, they are our customers that we are trying to sell to, seldom the other way around.

If you find them rude don't deal with them.

“I know it’s not a good area, but - 700 miles to SD - blah blah - what would you run it for?”

    $4200.

“You REALLY want $6/mile to run that?”

Yes. Round trip - like you said, bad area.

“Well, what’s your bottom dollar, I mean - if I could get you say - $3,000?”

You ask a man to build a house. He quotes you $100k. Do you ask him what his bottom dollar is? - it’s not a good approach to a business relationship sir.”

Next day it’s being peddled for $2500.

I could care less. I ain’t hungry. I’m polite, just not hungry.

I get the most rudeness from young guys (males). They are most likely to say things like "Whut" and "yeah" in a business conversation......and just generally give you the feeling that you are disturbing their nap on the couch while they suck on the bong and watch Price is Right.

The second I have that feeling I return the favor or just sign off immediately.

I did get a call one time, not even a "hello", or "this is Tom from ABC brokerage"...when I answered the call and said hello all I got was "do you have a truck in Salt Lake City"...I had to ask him who he was and where/who was he calling from. It was a very short call.

I get that all the time. Blows my mind. Almost every single time a broker calls me I have to ask them who they are. Sometimes they mumble it real fast at the beginning but not good enough. This sounds like I'm a jerk but if you want to speak to me ID yourself loud and clear when you call, otherwise I just assume you are a telemarketer I'm about to hang up on.

I am sort of relieved hearing that, because I thought I had this incurable speech comprehension problem - difficulties to gather vowels into words from people speaking with a dialect or with some cultural speech peculiarities, it is especially magnified over the phone. I always blamed it on my not being born a natural English speaker, though.
