I'm currently working for UPS Freight. I'm in my first year so the pay sucks!!! Also, I'm working the dock mostly with very little driving. I have an opportunity to go to XPO. Their terminal is literally 1 mile from my home. I'm trying to talk myself out of leaving UPS. Can anyone provide some solid advice?

    Better pay from the get-go.
Less time and money spent commuting.
I bet XPO's pension plan will be way more solvent than UPSF down the road.

XPO is Europe's largest carrier. They bought Con-Way transportation in 2015 to get a foothold in the US. They're doing fine.

UPS Freight is UPS's attempt to dominate LTL by purchasing Overnite Transport in 2006. It hasn't worked out. Freight is a commodity business and no one is willing to pay a premium for the UPS name. UPS wants to sell. XPO almost bought UPS Freight in the last half of 2018. Amazon pulled their freight contracts to bring their freight in-house and the sharp, sudden crimp in XPO's cash flow forced them to back away.

Knowing UPS Freight is for sale, do you really want to invest years of your life there only to get little or no credit for time served from their new owner?

I'm not familiar with the LTL world at all. This is all new to me.

XPO is my vote. In my time in LTL I’ve learned 2 things about UPS Freight.
    1) They sound like they hemorrhage money. From the info I gathered in my little pea brain, when they bought Overnite they thought “we can move boxes, why not freight?” And bit off more than they can chew. It’s a completely different animal. And as someone stated on here, their rates on freight are crazy and no one wants to pay them. In the package world you have about 2 options. In the freight game you have many. And it doesn’t make sense to pay a higher price just to get your freight tore up by UPS when someone else can forklift stab a pallet for cheaper.
    2) They have rules upon rules contradicting rules they made up to rule out other rules. The motto I’ve always heard from them when I asked about UPS Freight is “it’s the best paying job you’ll ever hate”. If you can hang in there the pay scale is good. Real good. But once you make it they look for reasons to can you because you are topped out.

That’s my $.02 and this is what I gathered in the St. Louis area. As a matter of fact they closed some satellite terminals this year in the area already. Your barn might be different. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Neither.......XPO has no pension BTW. The pay and benefits are good but you’ll get #### runs/routes, kill yourself physically, work the dock a lot, and have “garbage freight for garbage customers” as another board member so accurately put it. The trailers are horrible. Go read about the Safe Stack bars injuring drivers. One just had his spine torn from it falling on him. Having said all of that, I know nothing about UPSF.
