Can I attend a truck course out of state and then use the certification I get at the end to get a full license in my home state?

The 160 hr training certificate? The problem is you need to provide the truck to test in if you do it that way. Ryder or Penske won’t rent you one with a permit. Much easier to use the school’s truck to get your license in the state where you train then get it reissued in the state where you live. PITA if you live in CA or IL, not too bad anywhere else.

Most states will recognize your cdl certificate and permit or out-of- state cdl and simply give you the cdl from your home state.
Trucking companies that have their own cdl schools do this every day. The student goes back to their home state, to the DMV and show the paperwork and get a cdl.

When I moved to Nevada, the DMV just gave me a new eye test and took a new photo, then gave me my new cdl.

As @Lunatic Fringe posted, CA & IL aren't normal, resident friendly states and make life miserable for any cdl holder. They both love to flunk drivers that move there from other states.

BS,,,, Every tech school I have ever heard of has a truck to both train and have available to test in. If you stand behind this position I will ask you to link to any school that doesn't have training trucks!

Yes, just like a company financed school. If you go out of state, train, and test you can take that to your home state and get your CDL. The rules have been changed! Yes, there are some states that go out of their way to be hard on drivers!

I believe you have read his post wrong. My reading of it is that he is saying if you go home with a 160 certificate you will need to rent a truck. I believe he is encouraging him to take the test at the tech school and then do the license transfer at home. Maybe I'm wrong.

I read the OPs question three times. Yes, I thought that too, but there is a huge difference between certification and a 160-hour certificate. My reply was directed to the fact that the person singled out a tech school. There is NO difference between the two in regard to going back home to get your CDL. Until the OP makes their question more clear that is all I can say!

I plan to get the permit in my home state.
I will do a truck course in another state. It's a course offered in a community college.
I will take the skills test at the end of the course. The instructors are the ones who do the testing at the end of the course. The testing is part of the course if that makes sense.

I will return to my home state after all is said and done.
Once I go to the DMV and submit all the required documents I will have a CDL for my home state right?

That's the way it works, unless you live in CA or IL
