    My instructors havent been able to clarify this for me. They want me to stop in 5th but I never slow down enough to grab 5th and usually end up missing it and coasting the last 50 feet to the light.
    So my question is, during my road test next week, when I come to a stop at a light or sign can i stop in 6th while on the brake or would that cause me to fail?
    Would I fail for taking a turn in 6th also?

    If you are in proper gear my guess is you should be ok. If you coast they will probably fail you.

    I swear I heard a "trainer" tell a guy not to shift below 7th, "all that revving and downshifting wastes fuel."

    I usually aim for a gear higher than I need by my speedometer, you can always drop another, not do like I’ve seen some, rev it up then grind til it goes into gear.
    I wrote on a guys road test once under remarks “couldn’t shift” for doing that,

    Why 5th? Did the instructor give you a reason for 5th gear instead of 6th? Yes, the coasting will count against you in a test, but I don’t recall reading anything that states what gear you should be in to avoid coasting.

    @gentleroger, have any thoughts?

    I'm not talking about coasting, that's not a problem I'm having. I am wondering whether I can come to a stop in 6th during my driving test, or do I need to be in a gear lower that? I'm in pennsylvania. that

    In Michigan when I took my CDL test, we had to downshift all the way to first gear to pass. And of course starting in first gear.

    Perhaps your instructor wants you to do 5th because he knows that it’s difficult for you. It will show him that you have full control of the rig. If that’s the reason, I have to applaud him. He’s better than average.

    So what do you have to do to get into 5th? @Judge posted the answer.
