It’s kind of the same idea of a truck that’s parked with an orange cone in front. I know they have to do it, but seriously if I don’t see the truck odds are I won’t see the cone either and hit them both.

Now if they wanted to have some good, working technology, they would tap into the cellphones and while you are texting your friend you would suddenly get a message, “caution, you are about to run over something!!!!”

Railroads require driving with headlights AND flashers on.

    Rule #8
Used to it was just headlights, but idiots wouldn’t run them in the yard, so now the gate guard makes you turn on all lights.

I think the reason for putting out the cone is not for warning other drivers, it is a safety practice to ensure that the driver has done a thorough walk-around inspection. :dontknow:

I only use my 4 ways when it’s raining out. That way people know it’s raining and they should be more cautious.
I’ve been to 4 ports on the east coast and never heard of this. There seems to only be a few rules in the port:
    1. There are no rules.
    2. Use your horn not your brake pedal.

    that’s about it.

Yeah, that's me. Polite, following the rules, grinning and bearing it. It's nice to fantasize about bullhorns and cattle prods though, something to get those sorry arse, mofos moving.

I realize you're being facetious, but people are soooo awful about running their 4 ways here in FL at the slightest sprinkle.. Turns the super slab into a frickin disco ball that can be extremely distracting, especially around twilight hour..

So bad FDOT displays on the electronic message boards
"When raining, wipers & headlights on, flashers off!!" No 4 wheeler has ever managed to read one of these signs, I swear.. :biggrin_25513:

We are required to place a cone during EVERY backing maneuver at a customer or at our plant and check the wheels whenever we leave the cab.
Obviously this doesn't happen every time but somewhere in the distant past someone got out without setting the brakes and a rollaway occured so they implemented a 100% effective way to prevent it.
As far as the cones go it guarantees you GOAL and has eliminated nearly all of our slow speed backing incidents in which any contact with anything is a preventable..even a cracked clearance marker. Every incident is subject to a root cause analysis and that's how they try to prevent repeated problems. Almost all of ours can be traced to driver error i.e. not following sop.
Around here you get 1 strike..get a second and 90% of the time you're history.
It is a lot to ask but none of the drivers make less than 100K a year so we try to follow the rules but it can be a pia.

We are encouraged to use all lights available as well as 4 ways at the customer property. If there was ever a lawsuit over an incident no attorney could ever say we could have done more to be more visible.. probably why I'm the guy who keeps his mirrors and lights clean.
