WSTF I thought USX owned part of smith lol
-
US EXPRESS is privately owned. It means you can't buy US EXPRESS stock.
On the US EXPRESS web page it shows Smith Transport as one of the families of US EXPRESS. USX bought Smith Transport. -
Thought I said that, but thanks!
-
thx for the clarification a friend of mine was misled at smith

no usx has not been bought out- they went privately owned (bought back all stocks from stockholders) pay scale ? they are telling to many drivers "go team, "go lease", or go home, and numerous went home & to other companys, now they are hiring mostly Lease drivers, and making some solo drivers, sign an agreement that they will not get paid dention, or layover, and will only drive western regional, then are sent out of the region, and left sitting with no detention or layover or breakdown pay..
what a company !!!!!!!!!!Poobah Thanks this. -
I would bet the payscale goes down if it does anything. The worst company is North America, Knight Transportation, keeps dropping their payscale.

March of 2010 I picked up my first solo truck from the Ellenwood terminal. Judging from the abundance of Smith Transport trucks in the yard and the remodeling project that was under way at that time, I had the impression the terminal had been operated exclusively by Smith prior to their involvement with USX. In December of 2008, a poster on Layover.com had this to say regarding the matter:
"I know USX bought 47% of Smith transport. They did that a few months ago. From what I understand, Basically, what will happen is Smith has about 5 years to buy their stock back or thier trucks start turning red. It is what USX did with Arnold and Total Transportatino of Mississippi. They did it with abilene too, but abilene managed to buy back thier stock. [sic]"
The validity of this can be partially substantiated here. For those wishing to delve further into the issue, there are links on the page including one to a source where, for a $36 fee, one can obtain a more detailed report on the deal.
While being assigned to the Western Region, this was partly my own experience as well. One day while running around L.A. loading up another trailer to bring back to Colton to be passed on to a team or delivered to the BNSF rail yard, I received an actual telephone call from my DM (proving, to my astonishment, that she really did know how to work the device!!!) asking me to report to her dispatch office to sign some papers. They included not only forfeiting the accessorial charges mentioned above, but they also wanted me to agree to not being paid the extra stop amounts (a part of the drivers compensation package in which USX excels above other companies) as well. Three extra stops between the first and last was worth a decent $105, and they were asking me to forfeit that and rely on mileage pay alone...all for the priviledge of spending several days a week wrestling with the L.A. freeways (eventually I came to feel quite comfortable with them) and dealing with frequently tight and challenging pick up locations (not so much). All the while knowing that the most I could hope for upon breaking out of the L.A. vortex, was a run somewhere in the additional 10 western states. Not really all that bad when compared to other sections of the country, but the trade off just didn't seem to make enough "cents" to me; I turned in my keys instead.
