I’m in the pickup truck pulling the white cargo trailer. The guy in the blue car comes screaming up beside me just as the merge lane ends and basically tries to pass me on the right and bully me off the road. He caused me to cross the yellow line several times. I’m like screw you arse hole, I’m not letting you in (mistake).

He’s driving on the shoulder as an overpass comes up. The road narrows and he hits me. We pull over. I reached for my pistol not knowing if this guy was a complete psycho. Turns out he was just your run of the mill jackwad.

I asked him if it was worth it to be one car length ahead. He said heck yeah it was. I pointed to the damage on his left rear door and fender where his car made contact with my tire. He said he didn’t care because it was a rental. He also cited some bogus laws about if the contact was on the rear half of his car it was by definition my fault. Then he claimed that I rear-ended him. Had a sheet-eatin’ grin on his face the whole time.

Luckily someone with a dash camera caught the while thing. His grin turned into a look of shock when the State Trooper informed him that he was at fault for failure to merge safely.

I hope he didn’t decline the accident insurance because my big tire left an eight inch wide rubber rub mark on his door and boogered up his wheel well trim. My truck has a couple of minor paint scuffs that I may be able to buff out.

In hindsight, I wish I had just been the bigger person and avoided the accident. It took 45 minutes sitting there wasting my time to find out he was at fault (although it is delicious that he’s going to have to pay). Next time I’ll be the “professional” driver and let the childish jerks do their thing far away from me. You guys have to deal with this crap every day, I’ll bet.

Anyway, it’s a good lesson that I’ll remember.

    Glad you learned something.

Never underestimate the idiocy of the driving public.

Sounds like you found the nicest trooper in America. Not even a hint of a-hole.

    Trucker61016 and bzinger Thank this.

I’ve had a few other encounters with Florida State Troopers, none involving me getting a ticket or anything, but I formed the impression that they were all giant richards. This guy was very nice.

So what is the law actually? I get this all the time, even those who force their way in when traffic is inching forward in bumper to bumper. If I just keep going and run into his side am I at fault?
