Permit load routing

    I had a permit load going to an oil well site. It was only 9'6" wide, so nothing special. The routing that I received was crazy. There is basically 4 lane/Interstate highway most of the way except for the last 15 miles or so. Had a special route for the haul road going to the well pad, as there is a bridge on a county road that you cannot cross. I had been to this site previously with a legal load.

    Ohio sent the route past the 4 lane state highway, onto a 2 lane state highway, through several small towns and red lights. Then the end of the route would have sent me the wrong way into the well site. The load is delivered, but should I have tried to get the route changed? It was a last minute load, and I was already pressed for time, so didn't have time to get it changed. Just wondering if I run into this down the road.

    Ohio is hard to get ahold of anyone to make a change. Other states are easier, let you permit company try to change. I think off route in Ohio is on 2 days in the electric chair.
    Ohio does have a new online page with lots of their permit rules.

    My experience with changing permits routes, is if you don't like that route, wait till you see this one.
    It is not unusual to be routed down a dead end road, or on a weight restricted road.I caught the dead end, by looking at a satellite map the nite before

    Permit company over the phone should be able to look at the state website and explain why - like - “No wide loads over 9’ at ‘x’ point” .

    Then you can try to jump off and back on to avoid the restrictions, sometimes it just is what it is.

    Don’t forget to carry OS-1A provision sheet in Ohio, and don’t write on the permit.

    And don’t stop for fuel, bathroom repairs etc.

    That’s 3 days in the electric chair. Which is about as much fun as their 55mph permit speed limit.

    I remember going to the PennDot office circa 1977, for a permit to move an excavator. told the lady where I was going and she routed me from the yard, onto the highway, to the correct exit and local route and neglected the small road that was the last leg to the job location.

    When I mentioned that last little bit, she said 'Oh, that's not state roadway, we don't issue a permit for that'...

    I called a permit company we were using . I was informed it would take several days to get those permits because it was local. I called another permit company and she had them within 5 minutes. I no longer use the other company

    This is why I used an experienced permit company that charged me a ridiculously small amount of money; no headaches or worries and she just got it done.
