With 1 exception (team driving) the only time that is restricted is driving time. You can be on duty for 168 hours straight in a week and be perfectly legal. You can not, however, drive until the proper break is done. Sure on duty affects drive time, but it's only drive time that is restricted.

The ELD will tell you 14 hrs as it counts down(of course you can do a split but when your 14 sitting at Zero it's Zero period) and if course if you run Canada like I do now and than you have 16 hrs, after that it's a flat out ZERO looking at you in the face

And again, all the zero means is you cannot drive. You can be, and go, on duty anytime you wish. You might have to restart a break, but you are not limited by on duty time. (Note the red word drive)

§395.3 Maximum driving time for property-carrying vehicles.
    (2) 14-hour period. A driver may not drive after a period of 14 consecutive hours after coming on-duty following 10 consecutive hours off-duty.

No one is saying an inspection is other than On Duty. What we are saying is the 14 hour clock doesn't matter. You can have zero driving time avail, and 100% legally go on-duty for the inspection for however long you want. You, however, cannot drive until a valid reset is made.

You don't get it, do you. There is nothing saying you can't go on duty and literally work for the rest of your life without going off duty. You just can't DRIVE until you reset.

Dieselboss, jdchet and ZVar Thank this.
