I have a 2005 freightliner century and Detroit 60 series engine. Today I drove 27 miles and when I stopped to get the load, I hear a knock in the engine like a drum; bum, bum, —bum. Repeated after it in the same rhythmic tone. Any idea what it might be?

A knock in the engine is never good, could be a lifter,
It may be about to throw a rod.

It could be several different things but if it’s making a noise it shouldn’t it needs to be checked out immediately. It definitely isn’t a lifter though, that engine has an overhead cam the rocker arms ride directly on top of the cam

Maybe it bull gear getting lose. I has bull gear go I just know they get play in them before going out. That will take out the entire engine if bull gear goes bad. The Detroit S60 always had this problem as engine would get high mileage. Mine had 1.4 million and never when bad but they should be checked around 700,000 miles
