I'm leasing a 2008 Raven 53' spread axle trailer right now from the company I'm also leased onto for around $1650 a month. So I'm thinking I could find something cheaper that I would eventually own.

Anyways the trailers I've looked at so far on commercial truck trader "the few that are on there 1,500 miles away were varied between spread axle and none spread axle and also axles that are movable. I'm in the central texas area by the way and can't find any close by. At least not 53 footers. And the ones they do have are brand new and over 50 grand.

So what's the difference between these. I mean benefits and drawbacks? I mean it's obvious that having tandems that are adjustable would be beneficial but spread and not spread? Not sure about that. Maybe something to do with better weight distribution or something?

Also, some ideas on what to expect to pay would be nice. I have no idea other than what I see on the truck trader website.

    What do ya'll think?

Check Wilson Flatbed, or TMC is sales theirs, in good shape, coil package etc, good flatbed spec.
Tandem sucks for flatbed, unless it’s a moveable axle.

I run a 48 ft spread flatbed and the only benefit I know of is it allows you 40k pounds on the axles instead of 34k which is important to me. The only con I can think of is sharp turning is hard on the tires. If you ever have to make sharp turns in the grass or soft dirt, you will tear that up too.

With dump valve on tail axle, its not so bad, though the reason for the tail dump is technically to lower tire scrub in tight turns.

The 40 k on trailer axle is the big reason for running a spread, less monkeying with shifting axles, no air lines changing geometry and springs breaking, lessens offtracking

Op, any specific reason you are looking for a 53? What do you haul that a 48 doesnt cut it for?

$1650 to lease a trailer with a company you are leased onto seems really expensive. You could go to TNT and lease a brand new one cheaper than that.

buying one you either need cash or financing in order then go shopping. There are trailer out there for sale. Not nearly as scarce as the dry van market.

Unless you have needs for a 53 on a routine basis.

A 48 spread is all you need.
