I hate to hear about O/O going out of business, but I agree with blackw900.
Truckin ain't everyone's cup of coffee, and operating your own machinery REALLY isn't for everyone. Every hand thinks about being an o/o at one time or another, but it's not a matter of if you can do it at the moment, you have to look at everything long term. You need to know how to manage your stuff & keep yourself otr at all times. I know I'm only 17 and all but I do know a little bit about truck drivin, please note the emphasys on 'little bit'; but you do need to know how to manage your money, you need to have enough will power to keep goin' when the goin' gets tough! If things get tight, you may have to make sacrifices, but sometimes making some sacrafices can lead to greater oppurtunities, you just have to hold tight & enjoy the ride while you can. But don't be ignorant about it, you need to be smart & have enough mental strength to do it!
And for that fact alone, this is why I respect O/O's so much. Most, if not all, of you have it rough now. But please, just hang in there! The United States of America rolls on 18-wheels, and it's guys and girls like you out there who make this country keep movin!
God Bless all truckers!

My wife, My Friends, basically everyone that I come in contact with is telling me not to buy a truck!
I have been doing this for 16 yrs. Can NOT imagine myself doing anything else. But I am at a loss for as to why there are so many O/O's going out of business! I haul produce for the Oakland Ca Markets. this is very hard work, but even as a Co. Driver I make REALLY #### GOOD MONEY! And these guys are buying up equipment left and right(even though they r peterbuilts).
as ststed B, must of been some bad business choices that were made. -
That's what everyone told me as well. Sometimes you have to tilt your head a little to the side the view a breath taking painting.... Some make it, some don't. It all depends on the decisions you make. So... You want to buy yourself a truck? I say do it. But know what your operating costs are. Know what it costs per mile & per day to run that truck down the highway. And don't accept ANY freight that pays less then your operating costs.

My long term goals are to become an O/O. That is why I am not taking the usual beaten path that many newbies do. I have avoided the megacarriers and started with a small company now. Now I am running with an O/O, it gives me a better perspective on what being an O/O is all about, What all is involved.
There are those who don't understand why I am taking the path I am, going thru more training than the usual couple months. It is because of my long term goals.
I understand that being an O/O is a lot more than just buying a truck and being able to fix it. It is a business, and you have to have a knowledge base and a business plan.
Right now, I am building the foundation for my future in trucking. I know years ago when I was in construction building houses I learned how important a good foundation is. You build a house on a poor foundation and it won't last.
You try to start your own business as an O/O on a poor foundation and you are headed for trouble as well. That being said, only you know if you have the foundation built, if so, go for it, if not wait and work on the foundation. -
You seem to be someone that actually thinks things through and considers all of the probable issuse that could arise. You also are not afraid to appear to not know everything.
It is my opinion that when you decide to buy a truck and go into business for yourself that you will have a much better chance of success than a lot of people that don't posess those qualities.
In other words...I think you'll do fine.LavenderTrucker Thanks this. -
Thanks blackw900.... I do think things thru. It is probably because I grew up before nintendo, guitar hero and wii. Atari was out, but we didn't have one, so my brothers and I played a lot of chess and battle ship! LOL

Hmmmmmmmmm......I don't know how I managed then.
I was into Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and Black Sabbath! -
I went thru a Lease/op from an individual a few years back. Needless to say, It left a very bad taste in my mouth! $15,000 in the hole and a marriage down the drain.
I am taking all precautions! -
Stay away from lease purchase programs. 99.9% of them are designed the way they are just so they can do what they did to you!
