I had a friend from another ltl call me the other day and ask what the maximum front trailer weight you can take with a day cab twin screw was and I had no idea.

The driver said their meet driver brings them a 22,000 lb front trailer w/ a twin screw day cab and that they are always overweight on their drives.

I drive a single screw day cab and I know 26,300 lbs is about the limit for the front trailer (personal experience).

I looked in the Colorado CDL Manual under combinations and couldn’t find it.

Anyone know what the maximum front trailer weights are for

    a single screw day cab?
    a twin screw day cab?
    a twin screw sleeper?

    while hauling doubles.

or where I might find such information?

    Colorado weight limits are
    20,000 lbs steer axle
34,000 lbs drive axles and tandems axles

Overweight on the drives or over gross?
I run for FedEx Freight and have had trailers 26,000 scale on a single screw while pulling doubles.

That’s tough to do unless either a shipper lied about what something weighs or a dock idiot did something incredibly stupid while loading like double stack loaded chemical totes or heavy crates of tile in the first row.

A 20K scale reading on a single drive axle will equate to roughly 23K-25K on a tandem depending on fifth wheel placement, since I run with mine slid up.

Well, it’s going to vary because not all loads are created equal.

I’ve done linehaul runs where a lead one way with 18k scaled the same on the drive axle as the 22K lead on the backhaul.

It really is simple. Assuming 12,000 lb steer axle and tires, you're allowed 12,20,20,20 and 20 for a set of doubles. Again assuming 12,000 weight on steer axle, and perfectly loaded, all other axles would be 17,000, and you wouldn't be over gross. If you're running a single pup, assuming 12,000 steer, then max weight would be 52,000 lbs. How much your trailer could weigh would depend on how much your tractor weighs.

There is no way that a 22,000 pound trailer is overweight. 22,000 lb load, well with my 48' aluminum flatbed with side kit and chains and dual drive sleeper tractor, my weight would be a little over 52,000. I can not imagine that a single axle tractor with pup weighs more than 25,000 pounds. Like @MACK E-6 said, it's got to be way heavy on the drives!

My single screw with an empty pup would weigh around 24K.

But the problem is you can’t always trust what’s on paper.

It’s impossible for a 22,000lb pup to be overweight on the drives of a twin screw.

Or are you saying the twin screw meets with a single screw? In that instance, both drivers should scale an empty with a full tank of fuel and compare to find the difference. That’s the amount that the twin screw driver needs to subtract to make sure it won’t make a single screw overweight. The single screw driver needs to add that same amount to the gross weight to make sure he doesn’t bring a set that will be over gross with a heavier twin screw.

That’s good advice for the ones who pull pups with sleepers as well.
