Haven't they been moving containers on rails for 1000s of years already? I guess we shouldn't be surprised it took them this long to think of this idea.

Obviously with the lack of open deck freight in Utah, they should be able to move lots of this stuff rather quickly when it arrives.

I've never been to a sea port in California, do they have rails actually running through the port or are they totally separate?

Freight trains could help decongest the Port of Long Beach

They spent millions, years ago, to sort out the routes for the double stacks

The backlog and other problems at the California ports can be solved by modernizing the ports.
Automated/robotic ports don't need Longshoremen; just need tech savvy employees. One person can unload 6 ships at the same time by using a computer in an office. Don't even need truck drivers except for those picking up or dropping off containers. Robotic trucks do the rest.

Much of Norfolk is automated. It runs leaps and bounds better than Baltimore who's Marxist manned workers strangle the entire state's economy.

Is my thinking correct? That a container comes off a ship, onto a chassis, then to a rail yard to be sorted and stacked on a train, but what the article says is that they just want to load containers at the port regardless of destination and then sort them in Utah? That would clear the port out quicker but stuff still needs sorted eventually. Sounds to me like UP is looking to cash in.

Some go to railyards but many of them go to customers via truck.

I've seen no lines at the yards so seems like a California/new York problem or no problem at all.

Those ships could go the other ports in Oregon and Washington also. Something to do with the contracts between the Union and the cargo shippers.
It looks like it is the Union Longshoremen that are making a mess of things, that is what I read.
Better solution, move the jobs back to the USA or at least the Western Hemisphere. Before this manufacturing control by china becomes worse.

Our economy would be so much better if the manufacturing base was returned.

"American workers are causing this backlog, so lets put more on the American workers to fix it." At least that's what I'm reading here....

Recognize China is our enemy and is waging asymmetric warfare against us economically, politically, environmentally, etc. Cancel their most favored nation trading status and levy heavy tariffs on their imports. Or forbid any imports from China.
Then see how fast the ports clear out. LOL
