I heard a guy tell how he used a steer tire chained to keep from sliding sideways on a glare ice truck stop parking lot. The drive chains were moving him but gravity was sliding him down sideways. He was the first or only truck to escape that morning.
Never been in that situation but sounds plausible

Ya know with it that icy i could understand a steer chain if he had drive chains on but....Really? My rule is if its icy enough to need chains then its icy enough to park my happy ###.

I've seen chained steer tires in Canada's back roads before.

Looks like he got himself in a bind, and is in the middle of chaining. #### happens.

The real travesty here is that people are still using Facebook.

This was posted on another site and they said the driver chained the steer axle because he thought his truck was front wheel drive.

That being said, I've chained my steer axle on glare ice to improve steering. It works but if you don't get the chains real tight you'll destroy some expensive stuff under the hood.

It certainly doesn't look like he got that chain all the way tight on that steer. That road definitely don't like it's in the best condition to try to move, but I understand it's a way of life in certain areas.

Call me a steering wheel holder, call me a rookie, say I'm not a real trucker! BUT if it's so bad I need chains, I'm parking it and enjoying some good sleep. It's not worth it to me.

I am the same way if I can afford to wait it out. I haven't been in that position to make that call yet luckily.
