SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah lawmaker is proposing that Utah adopt a "zipper method" for merging into a single lane, a change that would help prevent bottlenecks, easing the flow of traffic.

Utah Rep. Brady Brammer (R-Alpine) is suggesting the new law, which would have vehicles in the merging lane keep moving to the front of the line (just behind the obstruction) then slide over into moving traffic.

This avoids the mid-lane merges that can bottle up traffic and potentially cause accidents.

Although some argue it could create road rage if drivers perceived someone was cutting in line, experts think it's the most efficient and safest method for keeping traffic moving.

Violation of this change, if enacted, would result in a traffic infraction.

LOL. Yea. That will work just fine. You see how well it works in every construction zone already in place for the past 30 years. Guy probably thinks he is a genius. I hope they used taxpayer money to perform a “study”.

It really irks me that people don’t understand the issue. You have two lanes of traffic on an already congested highway and you take one away. There is nothing that can be implemented to keep traffic moving. Nothing.

I had to post it, just on the fact that this "lawmaker" must have no idea what life in the real world is like. I suppose in some perfect world where we all get along that zipper method could work. Maybe he should spend more time looking into making construction projects completed in a timely manner, with heavy fines imposed for not completing on time.

I hope I didn’t come off as yelling at you LOL. I was mad at the situation. Construction zones have become increasingly unsafe just in how they are set up. Throw in a huge group of retarded drivers and we have what we have. A cluster F.
We have a local project on 79. It has changed as they complete lanes and bridges. Well they recently decided to split the lanes. There was not much warning. After a few weeks and 3 accidents of people smashing into the Jersey barrier that initiated the split, they removed it and went back to the two lanes side by side. I can’t believe they thought what they did was a good idea.

It's people wanting to live in a perfect world. On paper a zipper merge creates the least restriction to traffic flow. Simply match speeds and merge. Nothing to it.

Then we have real world examples of people being, well people and it never actually works like it does on paper.

It would work.... IF it would work. But t wont work. I tell you what would work.... If people would merge when the traffic signs tell them to merge. If everyone would merge 2 miles before the construction, & everyone would form one line before the congestion, traffic would flow. But this is exactly why the method they want to work, wont. Because people wont merge. Everyone wants to jump line to the front so their precious little selves wont have to wait like everyone else. If you wait until the end of the line, its going to get bottled up. When the ending lane has to stop, the running lane will have to stop to let those selfish idiots merge AFTER they have stopped.
If everyone would merge 2 miles before the construction, before traffic gets backed up & stalls.... and maintain a moving speed, traffic will flow. Zipper method will work 2 miles prior, but not at the end of the road/lane.

But I, being the most important person in the world, has the right to rush ahead of everyone else to get to the front of the merge. You other nothing's will need to stay out of my way.
