Hey Everyone,
So now that I'm pretty committed to the turnpike gig, and the company I'm signed too, is committed to tripling the size of the LCV fleet in 18 months, its time to start thinking about the next truck.
My experiences with Modern Areo trucks of all makes and configurations, has not been good at all. My current Volvo I bought new in 2018 (2019 model) has had almost $60K in warranty work, and $10-12K out of pocket repairs in 600 000kms. While that sounds bad (and it is) this has actually been the best truck I've owned/driven. The Freightliners, Internationals, Volvo's, Pete 579 and KW T680 I had company, can only be described as rolling trash cans. The best truck I ever had, was a 2007 KW T660 with a C15 and 1.25 million kms.
As we all know, 98% of guys pulling Super B (Deck/Tanker/Hopper), Heavy Haul/Oversize, some LCV are running W900/T800s, 379/389 Petes, WS 4900's and the odd International 9900 here and there. Simple durable trucks with modern powertrains, that can handle being heavy all the time.
So out of those, I'm a W900 guy all day long, and the company is KW for the company trucks, so I can get in on some of that volume pricing. The question becomes, what kind of MPG can a guy expect in a modern W900 vs This Areo Junk, pulling LCV/SuperB?
W900 76in Studio, 240wb, X15 565/2050 Performance, 18 speed, 11R22.5's 3:25 gears. Run in 8lo (17th) which is 0.86 OD (save the big 0.73 OD for single trailer/Bobtail) and cruise at 1385 RPM @100km/hr (62mph). When the wind picks up, or conditions suck, drop to 7hi direct (16th), slow down to 90km/hr and run at 1450rpm.
Is 6-6.5 mpg (US) feasible in the summer? Winter I've given up guessing lol.
The W900 question.

I was issued a brand new W9 with a 565 X15P, 18 spd and 3.36 rears at my last job. The best mpg I got was 4.7 across I80 in Ohio. From what I've heard that truck is in the mid 5's now with over 100k on it

Seems like they're all cheap junk now, regardless of make/model.
TheStopSignGuy, Northern Nomad, BigHossVolvo and 1 other person Thank this. -
My 13L D13 automated gets 4.2mpg loaded pulling 63,500 through the mountains. Exhaust brake is mediocre at those weights.
My DD15 18sp gets 3.5mpg loaded same gross and routes.
I would get the W990 over the W900 to get the upgraded wide cab. The W990s look good when dressed up.
KW premium sleepers better than best Volvo interior option available, I feel. -

The problem with the W990, is it uses the same harness/air system/18 computers and modules as the T680. The W900 has 80% less wiring/computers/modules, esp with the Cummins. The durability is in the classic models, if I could just order a 660 I would lol. -

I owned 2 W9's back in the 90's. One was a 1992 and the other was a 1996. Both were great trucks and had the aerodyne bunks with 60 series detroits.I had no problem getting 6-7 mpg running van trailers as long as you kept your foot out of it and didn't run 70 mph all day.I would think the newer engines should be able to do that or better now days. You obviously won't get those mpg's pulling pikes though. From what Iv'e seen they don't make the W9's as good as they did 20 years ago though.
BigHossVolvo, Pamela1990 and Dave1837 Thank this. -
I sat in a W900 at a dealership once. It felt overwhelming.
BigHossVolvo Thanks this.
